“Loved the privacy of the Wilder Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

I haven't seen all the rooms of the Walnut Street Inn, but if I go back I will ask for the Wilder Room again. It is the least expensive of all the rooms, and one of the most private as well. It is one of only two rooms on the third floor, and it has the distinct advantage of a tiny private porch (which looks right into the treetops!) plus a spiral staircase on the exterior of the building. So, to get to the Wilder Room you can either walk through the house or you can go up the spiral staircase. The staircase and back porches are visible in some of the photos that travelers have posted to this site.

Other things I liked about the Wilder Room: it has an antique tub and small sink directly in the room. The Wilder Room's cozy private toilet is in a closet-like space behind a door that is smaller than the typical door. The Wilder Room is really quite spacious and the tub is probably 20 feet from the bed on the opposite side of the room. There is a ceiling fan if you like a breeze at night. It is decorated in a simple way. The only downside to the room, I suppose, is that the mattress is old. It was comfortable enough for us but it has been around a while. Maybe that should get on a checklist of things to update :)

Overall I must say this room was so sweet I remarked to my traveling companion that I would like to be able to live there all the time. I guess it resembles what would have been my dream bedroom when I was a little girl, or the kind of studio apartment I wished I could have found when I was in college.

Speaking of college, MSU is within easy walking distance, so if you stay here you can just leave your car out back and walk to where you need to go.

“Great location, hospitality, and Bed and Breakfast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

The Walnut Street Inn is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are very comfortable and breakfasts are fantastic. Gary and his staff make it a home away from home. You couldn't find a more ideal location to do most anything in Springfield. You are walking distance to Missouri State with all their sports and concerts and Juanita Hammonds Hall for all the performing arts. You can walk to a Springfield Cardinals game and it's just a short drive to Bass Pro. Thank you Gary for a wonderful stay!

“We loved it and we'll be back.”

My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary and it was wonderful! The room was beautiful and very comfortable and we'd love to come back when we would have a need to use the fireplace. Gary, the innkeeper, was very hospitable and made us feel right at home. The breakfast we were served was absolutely delicious. The room we were in had a jacuzzi that I would have loved to bring home with me! This is really just a great place to stay if you want to get away from it all and yet still be treated like family.

“A Great Home-Away-From-Home.”

I think I have now managed to stay at least once in every single one of the rooms at the Walnut Street Inn. I travel to Spfld. frequently as my daughter is in college there, and also to visit with friends, for reunions, etc. I prefer to stay in a B & B wherever I travel, and Walnut Street Inn is the standard to which I compare every other B & B. Gary and his staff go out of their way to makesure your stay is comfortable, and to accommodate personal preferences - delivering breakfast on a tray to my room, with lots of extra cream - recommending restaurants, the best car repair shop, activities in the neighboring downtown square, even advice on apartment hunting in the area for my daughter. The rooms are beautifuly appointed but not fussy; breakfast is delicious and always more that I can possibly eat, and the freshly baked cookies on the night stand are especially welcome when I arrive late at night. It is in an ideal location between MSU, Drury, and the Square, and the street with its lovely old Victorian homes is a delightful stroll after a long drive in the car. Rented the entire main house for a sorority reunion one summer weekend and it was the perfect setting for a comfortable, relaxing get-together. The back deck is sunny and cozy, especially nice when the yard is in full bloom.

“Superb in every respect!”

What a fantastic place to stay. The Walnut Inn is located on the edge of downtown (I think that's what they say in the US anyway...) and is onyl a two block walk from the bars, restaurants, the incredible Moxie Independant Cinema,, and much, much more. But don't be worried, the Saturday night I spent there was so quiet - I had a fantastic night's sleep in a great bed.

The whole place is beautifully done in Victorian style, very comfortable and homely, and is run by one family who are very welcoming indeed. I have to add that the breakfast was wonderful too! I would definitely stay here if I was ever to be passing through Springfield again - it would be my first choice.
