Multiple reviews list the Hyatt as a 'four-star' hotel, and after staying in this behemoth of a downtown accommodation, I can certainly understand why.
For starters, I can't commend the Hyatt Regency enough on its level of service. Checking in here can be a bit overwhelming if you're coming to St. Louis on a game weekend like I did. The lobby was insanely crowded, but helpful concierge pointed the way to the front desk without me having to ask and that was much appreciated. Alayna made me feel welcome with her courtesy and professionalism. It was also nice to be greeted in passing by staff during my stay. Although I had some billing discrepancies upon check-out, the matter was resolved with competence and courtesy from the front desk. Hyatt knows how to keep its business.
Although the internet price ($13) was a turn-off, Alayna informed me upon check-in that if I signed up for Hyatt's rewards program, I would receive free internet for a night and coffee vouchers at the very handy Starbucks in the lobby. I signed up and didn't have the same costly experience as others here; you may want to inquire about the program when visiting.
My fifteenth-floor double-bed room was spacious, stylish and in some aspects--peaceful. The design of the room is accented by modern features such as a large, flat-screen TV, tufted headboards, sleek lighting and a rectangular sink in the bathroom. I was a huge fan of the bathroom here. Instead of the usual obnoxiously bright overheads, the lighting in here was dim--yet effective. With a small bamboo plant on the counter and a rainhead shower (definite thumbs up), the calming design of the bathroom was apparent. The soaps and shampoos provided had some of the best scents I've ever found in a hotel. The bed itself was comfortable, accented with a cozy down comforter and multiple pillows. I slept well. An ergonomic desk chair was a nice feature, along with a small reading chair and table near the window. Room climate is controlled by a responsive digital theromostat.
Only a couple of issues made my stay less than perfect. Although I had both the venetian cloth blinds and the blackout shade closed, there was a noticeable draft in the room. I had to set the thermostat on 78 degrees to be comfortable, and I usually do not need the heat set that high to get warm. I think the windows may be in need of replacement, because I also heard some traffic noise from the street and interstate adjacent to the Hyatt--fifteen floors below. I agree with other reviews that the walls are thin here, but that wasn't problematic for me during my stay.
My only other problem existed beyond Hyatt's control, and that was my choice to pay the $3 per day weekend fee to Mansion House parking next door. Although I usually look for the cheaper option where parking is concerned, I would urge the visitor to self-park ($20 per night) with the Hyatt. Mansion House's parking garage is frustrating, disorienting, tight and even a little scary in places. There are no elevators, multiple differing exit signs are confusing and auto/pedestrian-shared roadways are a nightmare for people trying to get to their hotels. Do yourself a favor (especially if you have trouble walking or have a poor sense of direction) and pay the extra to park at the Hyatt.
If you're looking for a comfortable, stylish room in a hotel with three restaurants and a Starbucks in downtown St. Louis with fantastic proximity to the stadium, Gateway Arch and other attractions, you've found the right place. Hyatt Regency is worth your business.
Room Tip: Drafty on the north side of hotel; may want to stay elsewhere in the building. Staff is very accommo...
