I stayed here two nights on business, and even though I'd heard good things about the Drury chain and had good experiences with the chain a few years ago, I was NOT impressed with this particular property. It is sorely in need of renovation (which, to be fair, appears to be underway) and could use an upgrade on the service front, too.
When I made my reservation for a King suite, I was very clear in the reservation about my desire for a room on a higher floor. Upon check-in, that clearly expressed preference was ignored -- my room was on the hotel's first floor, with windows right on the parking lot (in fact, the bedroom window of my suite was huge and directly on the parking lot, which required me to keep the privacy curtains shut for the duration of my stay if I wanted to prevent headlights from shining in my room or have any sense of privacy). When I noted the preference I'd expressed in my reservation, the staff member shrugged his shoulders and offered no apology for the preference being completely ignored. When I asked if there was a room on another floor (even expressing a willingness to be in a room with two queen beds OR a non-suite), the staff member simply said, "we're full" and didn't even bother to check the room inventory on the computer. While I cannot verify whether the hotel was full or not, my check-in was relatively early in the day, so I am fairly confident that the staff member could have found me a room on a higher floor and put a person who'd noted no floor preference in my first floor room. Similarly, the staff member could have put me in a regular room (as I said I would be happy to do) and upgraded a person with a reservation for a non-suite to my room. Overall, he gave the distinct impression that he just wasn't interested in investing much effort on finding something that might be to my satisfaction.
Do not reserve a suite at this hotel. My "suite" was a joke. It was essentially no larger or nicer than a standard room; in essence, a regularly-sized hotel room was just carved in half with a wall. The living room was tiny, with the television (a huge old non-flat screen TV) placed at a 90-degree angle to the couch. While everything in the room was clean, the room's decor -- carpet, lamps, furniture -- was TIRED: worn around the edges, dated, faded. Also, the room barely had any plugs; to plug in my cell phone, I had to move a night stand and unplug a lamp. That drives me crazy; this hotel, at least in its pre-renovation state, simply does not meet the needs of today's business traveler.
The hotel's breakfast was fine (save for disgusting coffee). It also offers a complimentary "5:30 kickback." While the gesture of a manager's reception is nice, for anyone watching his/her eating habits, the kickback was a nightmare -- the choices were tortilla chips with a gloppy 'cheese' substance, hot dogs, chicken tenders, etc.
I'm not sure if there are better options in St. Joseph or not, but when business brings me back to town, you can be sure I'll check-out the other options before returning to the Drury Inn. Very disappointing overall. Let's hope it gets a little better as the sorely-needed renovation continues. I'd also like to see them renovate the attitude of the front desk staff.

Thank you for your feedback! I apologize you had many concerns during your stay with us. During the time of your stay, we were in fact in the middle of renovation. Many of the concerns you had with the room have been updated with the renovation. We now have lamps with outlets in the bases as well as three extra plugs on our desks, new 37" Flat Screen TV's in all rooms (2 in rooms with Suites), new carpet, new furniture, and a new triple sheeting, white on white, bedding! It is always our first priority to honor guest requests. I am sorry we did not have your request available during your stay. We as a company have high standards for the service we provide our guests. I have been working with my team to make them feel more empowered to handle guest concerns when they arise. I hope you come check out our new look the next time you are in town. Thank you again for your comments.
