“Not a bad property but lots of band-aids and cut corners”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

This was my first stay in the Doubletree at Westport. Let me start off by saying this is not a bad hotel.

I choose this property because frankly I was getting bored with my regular St Louis property and wanted a change of views so to speak. So the good, the bed is comfortable and the sheets were a high thread count. This was tempered by the mattress which was obviously a lower grade with a pad over the top. The room service was fast and tasty. No complaints at all there. There is plenty of parking and the lot is well lit.

So some bad things, the hotel is sort of in the middle of nowhere. It is not near the Central West End which in the Hilton website description it sort of leads the reader to believe. It is close to I-270 but it is not easy to get to the property from the Interstate. The building is a big concrete box and during the last remodel, which seems to have been fairly recent, they went for a contemprary look. This aesthetic makes it feel cold and uninviting. The addition of granite is nice but it just looks like it was done as an after-thought and the furniture is too Ikea-ish. The soundproofing is typical of properties of this era and can be spotty. I was initially next to a family with small kids and I asked the front desk if they had another room open. They did and I was moved right away. I was happy for the transfer. Let me state that Adam at the front desk did a great job fixing that issue.

The one thing that I did notice which made the difference between average and above average were cleanliness issues. I noticed in the morning in better light that carpet was stained and there were toenails under the desk.

I understand that it is not easy cleaning a hotel room. I really believe the hardest job besides being a migrant labrorer is being a house keeper in a hotel. It is a thankless job and I know they get busy. BUT it is the job of someone to go back in and spot check the room. Stains on the carpet in the winter in the midwest happen. Toenails are not cool and should not happen.

That being said the staff was friendly and everyone deserves a second chance. I will give this property another shot. If you are looking for a 4 star this is not quite there but it is a SOLID 3 star property. If you are looking for CWE this is not it but if work is taking you to West County in the STL metro give it a shot. Thanks for reading.

Room Tip: Higher floor odd number rooms avoid I-270 noise

Dear Jerry H:

Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to complete this review. I am glad you found the bed comfortable. I can assure you the Sweet Dreams mattress is not inexpensive or lower grade. Hilton requires all of its brands to have a bed pad on each and everyone of the beds. The pad is there for some added comfort but mostly to provide another layer between the mattress and each guest. DoubleTree just completed their "Top of the Bed" program, with all new, basket weave, thick sheets and pillow cases. Glad you liked it.

The hotel is right off highway 270, visible from the highway. At the exit keep right, and turn right on Lackland Road. Travel a quarter mile, keeping straight through the light, and you are on Craigshire Road. The hotel is in between highways 64 and 70, about three miles from each highway. We are in St. Louis County, about 25 minute drive to Busch Stadium, and the Mississipi River. Thousands of fans and sight seers stay with us to attend Cardinals and Rams games, and to see the arch, zoo ect... If you are never going to leave downtown, then you probably want to stay downtown, but if you have multiple sights and places to see in the St. Louis metro area, we are centrally located. Central West End is about a fiteen minute drive. The beginning of St. Charles County is a ten minute drive on highways, 70 or 364, with highway 64 taking a little longer.

Thank you for the feedback on the service, cleanliness, and for recognizing Adam Glenn, our Front Office Manager. Thank you for telling Tripadvisor readers to give us a shot, and I hope you give us another shot.

Sincerely,

Dan Gough

“Restaurant and Waitress”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I just wanted to share my recent stay at this hotel, I was there for a week and half and everyone there was wonderful especially the waitress at the restautrant that I visited each morning, her name was Yongae, she made me feel so special and knew exactly what I wanted each morning, she remembered everything about me and all other guest who she waited on. She was so attentative and personable, everyone felt that comfort in her. She was the best part about my stay. Also Dan the manager was great and the two girls who worked at the bar, expecially when they were so busy and shorthanded. They all deserved a huge raise for all the hard work they did during my entire stay. Thank you for making my stay very pleasant and enjoyable, home away from home!!!

Dear MEESHIL from Lousiana: Thank you very much for taking the time to compose this review. I just gave a copy of your review to Yong Ae. It really has made her day. She is not just wonderful, she is "One of a Kind". She not only makes everyone feel special, but she can handle an amazing number of guests at one time and she still provide superior service to each person. I think I know what group you were with this past week, and my staff and I really appreciate your business, and we look forward to seeing all of you again soon.

I have shared this review with Dan Goszewksi, our Food and Beverage Manager and very soon the lobby lounge staff will see it as well. Our DoubleTree by Hilton staff appreciate all feedback, but thank you very much for recognizing several members of the Food and Beverage staff, especially Yong Ae, and giving all of us a reason to smile a little wider this Friday morning.
The St. Louis/Westport,DoubleTree by Hilton Staff recognize that you and your company could choose among dozens of hotels in the St. Louis area. Our team members work hard to deliver the service that will earn your business every trip. Yong Ae just told me that comments and reviews like this make the work all worthwhile. Come back soon.

Sincerely,

Dan Gough

Thank you for taking the time to compose your review of the DoubleTree by Hilton St. Louis Westport. My staff and I really do appreciate the feedback. Tripadvisor is a great tool that we have really embraced for well over a year. I am sorry that you experienced such poor housekeeping. I will definitely share this with Shawn Jeffries, our Housekeeping Manager and the rest of our housekeeping staff. Please come back and try us again, and give our housekeeping staff and I another chance. Again, thank you for your business and feedback.

Dear Yvonne:

Thank you for staying at our DoubleTree by Hilton and for taking the time to write your review. I have slept in our "Sweet Dreams" beds twice, and it really does make for a comfortable night's sleep. My staff and discuss the Tripadvisor reviews weekly and they will appreciate that you found us friendly. We just met earlier today to analyze our first four reviews of 2012. Hilton grades each of the hotels on friendliness of service in several different categories. It is exciting to see this on a TripAdvisor review. Please keep coming back and I promise we will have those Chocolate Chip cookies, with walnuts, waiting for you.

Sincerely,

“Great Extras, Good value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed at this hotel with my three daughters recently, and had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel offers all the standards -- nice, comfortable lobby, great bed, nicely decorated and updated room, good location near the airport, and pleasant staff. The reason for the high marks, however, is because of the extras. Here's an example:

* For fitness buffs, the equipment is in great condition (Precor). Also, the fitness room has free water bottles and towels, which is typically only found in the high-priced hotels. Very appreciated.
* Towels in the room are full-size/extra large, and plentiful. We did not order extra towels ahead of time (a nice Hilton feature), but the room was already stocked with more than the standard two. Also appreciated.
* There is a full-length mirror in the room. Great when traveling with teenage daughters!
* The room has an abundance of lighting -- not your average "one lamp on the table next to the bed and maybe one extra."
* Shampoo and conditioner bottles are larger than normal, which means you can easily get more than one person's use.
* The room has a full size desk for those of us who need a good working area.
* Warm cookies at check-in? Love it, after a long drive.

The hotel doesn't have a free breakfast, but instead has a good restaurant with a two-option buffet (full or continential) or a menu. The fruit was fresh, and selection was good. Our waitress was great. But it's important to consider this in the budget, since we spent at least $30 for the meal. Even with this, the hotel was a good value, and felt more expensive than what we paid.

One final note -- we stayed on one of the top floors, which meant it was absolutely quiet. Since the hotel is off the highway, being on a top floor may make a difference in your experience.

Bottom line, I would recommend this hotel, and will return when my business and pleasure takes me back to St. Louis.
