This was the second time my friend and I have stayed here. The first was a quick overnight, this time we stayed four nights. This is a new, railroad-themed hostelry. You can choose from standard double-queen rooms or special themed suites (like the Pullman). Cleanliness, comfort and nice beds, furniture and bathrooms are the norm.
The best thing though is the friendliness and service. If you are arriving by Amtrak, they will pick you up free of charge -- in LaPlata, where the "Southwest Chief" stops en route between Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, los Angeles and intermediate points, but also in Ottumwa, Iowa and Quincy, Illinois, as much as an hour away. Also, if you arrive in LaPlata by Amtrak, you get two nights for the price of one or four fro the price of two. Much helpful literature on area sights and day trip is available. We made great excursions to Walt Disney's home town in Marceline, MO, General John Pershing's Laclede, Mo birthplace, a nearby Amish community, historic river port Quincy, Il, Mark Twain's Hannibal, Mo and sites in Missouri and Illinois connected with Father Augustine Tolten, an ex-slave who was the first African-American Catholic Priest. Adjacent Kirksville has beautiful Thousand Hills State Park, and some interesting historic sites. On the hotel's grounds are the National Amtrak Museum as well as railroad photos and artifacts throughout the hotel. There is a large indoor pool. About the only negative is the one-star level continental breakfast. Unfortunately, the adjacent restaurant is awful, but there are many good dining choices a short drive away. Believe me, it's worth a trip to LaPlata!
