The good:
1) Friendly staff (Desk, housekeeping, and maintainence)
2) Clean hotel
3) I was given a discount as a walk-in without AARP or the like.
4) Although the rooms don't have fridges, the maintainence man heard I needed one and had it in there before I got into the room. This was a 2/3 full size too, not a camper fridge.
5) Good variety on the breakfast, although a somewhat small hotel.
6) Desk was very helpful with local information. This should be a given, but you would be surprised how many desk clerks don't know, or don't want to be bothered with such things.

The bad (and nothing was REAL bad):
1) They were varnishing the halls right by our room when we arrived, so everytime we went in or out we had to breathe it until it cleared a few hours later.
2) Our room was right by the houskeeping room, so we heard clanking early both days.
3) Our door wouldn't latch/lock when we went to eat. The desk said no one would go in, but I could not accept that. They were going to move us, but maintainence fixed the door as we were returning.
4) Odd location for the hotel. It's not on the main road, nor the intersecting road. When we had to go on a frontage road around a gas station, I thought the GPS got us lost for a moment.
5) No whirlpool. That mattered more to my family than me. The pool and pool room were nice, and decent-sized, so I thought it okay.
6) The hotel itself is older and smaller than the other two HIE I stayed at (Sturgis and Metropolis, Illinois). Kirksville is more than twice the size of the other towns, not sure why they have this small place. I don't mean to say the hotel is dumpy, because it's not. It's very clean, but the facets were scratched, the rooms were a little smaller, as well as the bathroom. The elevator was small, old, and slow. When I compared it to the other HIE, it came up short. It's still a decent hotel, with most of the amenties of the others, if not smaller.

All and all, we enjoyed our time here. I would stay here again if I was ever in Kirksville again, and that's mainly because all the staff (with a variety of ages) were all very pleasant!

Stayed here for several months back in 2010. Staff is attentive and courteous, eager to please, and that means everybody from the managers to the maids.
Breakfast is top notch HIE fare, hot and good with lots of choices.
Book early, this place fills up, especially during hunting season.Like another reviewer said, if there is no space here, drive to the Comfort Inn in Macon, that is a real good place as well.

I travel severl months a year for business and usually enjoy my stays at HIE. This one was below average for the following reasons:
- no healthy options for breakfast. The only healthy fresh choice was bannanas which were only available about once a week.
- cleanliness: Clean sheets were not put on the beds every night. Used wash clothes were no removed from the bathroom. I contracted pink eye after staying here. Toenail clipings were noticed on the floor.
- Refrigerators only come in very few rooms. Even if you request a room with a fridge the week before, that does not work.
- poor service - When questioned about some of the issues noted above, the staff was not apologetic at all. They more or less had the attitiude that "this hotel was one of your only decent options in this small town, so deal with it".

The room's airconditioner worked!! Great since it was over 100 degrees so I shouldn't complain. I just didn't get the room I thought I was getting. I thought refridgerators came in the room but they don't. I wanted a smoking room but they didn't have any available but they did have a patio we could smoke on, but the second night it rained and we had to sit out front. The ice machines had a hard time keeping up with making ice since it was so hot. They don't have counter space in the bathroom so the sink area outside of the bathroom is small and cramped with coffee maker included taking up space.
The bed was nice as was the work desk. They have really nice drapes in the room. It was clean. There is a good steak restaurant really close that I enjoyed. If I come back I will probably stay here again. But I want a refrig!!
