I booked a room here back in August for a trip from Los Angeles to Kansas. I received a confirmation from Priceline at the time informing me that my reservation had been accepted and provided me with a confirmation number. As I was leaving LAX to catch my flight, I decided to call the hotel to make sure everything was ok as we would be arriving late that day and I was traveling with my 83 year old grandmother. When I got a hold of someone at the hotel, they informed me that they had no record of my reservation and that their fax had been down for weeks. For starters, what kind of a hotel would allow their fax machine, where they process incoming reservations, to be down for weeks at a time. He informed me that there were no available rooms for the night, and that I would have to find another hotel. The man was fairly rude to me and basically left the situation saying not my problem and promptly ended the conversation. I then scrambled to try and figure out my options. I called priceline immediately from the terminal, and they connected me with their Booking.com rep (apparently priceline no longer handles their hotel bookings, they have outsourced to booking.com). The agent on the line informed me that they had attempted to fax the confirmation over 5 times in the previous weeks, and also had left several messages with the hotel management staff asking for confirmation of the booking. No calls were ever returned to Booking.com. The rep was able to get me a room nearby, but at triple the room rate. I was not needing anything fancy honestly, just a bed and a shower as we arrived late and we're picking up our rental first thing in the morning. The booking.com agent informed me that Day's Inn KCI was contractually obligated to pay the difference between the original booking rate at Day's Inn, and my subsequent hotel. At this point, I had to get on the plane, and was just thankful that I wouldn't have to spend the night at the airport with my elderly grandmother in her wheelchair. Before hanging up on me, the Day's Inn manager informed me that there was a wrestling convention in town and all of a sudden all the hotel rooms were booked. In fact, I got the last hotel room available in the KCI area that day when I booked at the second hotel.
I got home from my trip, and faxed over all the receipts to Priceline and Booking.com intending to be reimbursed for the difference and following the procedures they told me to do. Two months have now passed, and Priceline is finally throwing their hands up with the hotel management of this Day's Inn. They have tried time and time again to have me reimbursed, as they were under contract and I had a valid booking. This is verbatim from the email I just received yesterday from the priceline rep: "It is entirely the responsibility of the hotel to ensure your reservation was accepted and their contractual obligation to reimburse you for all your extra expenses that are directly attributable in the regrettable circumstance that the reservation cannot be accepted.
Regrettably, the Days Inn Kansas City International Airport have failed to honour this obligation and refuse to reimburse you.
We feel this is unacceptable and do not wish to see you lose out for an event that was entirely out of your hands. Priceline.com has taken the drastic decision to cover the hotels debt to you. We will continue to argue the case with the Days Inn taking whatever action we see fit. Although we are confident that we have established the hotels liability, the process is costly and time consuming; this is why we wish to ensure that you consider the matter resolve first."
So in the end, I'm getting my money back for the egregious treatment and disrespectful attitude of this hotel's management, but I've had to make dozens of phone calls, and send multiple copies of my bank statements, receipts, etc. I find it deplorable that a hotel would legally enter into a binding contract, and then give their customers such a complete run around. I recommend staying FAR away from this hotel, the previous reviews here may say that the hotel rooms are decent, but better hope their fax machines are working. Absolutely disgusted with my experience with this hotel. I'd give it no stars if I could...
Seems to me what happened here, is that they realized there was a convention in town all of a sudden and figured they could get a higher rate by "pretending" that they never received any confirmation from Priceline. Priceline called them time and time again, and they never responded. This whole situation was shady.
Room Tip: Better hope their fax machine's are "working"
