If you are either in Puerto Vallarta or Bucerias on the west coast of Mexico, be sure to hop onto a public bus and head out to Sayulita. At the time, the bus ride was about 45 minutes through some amazing rain forest for about 20 Pesos ($2 Canadian at 10 to 1 currency exchange).
Once you arrive in Sayulita, the bus simply stops on a dust covered road in a residential area and everyone gets off. You are about a 10 minute walk to the beach.
The beach itself is a wild beach, no life guards, etc. Multiple surf shops line the beach and an hour and a half lesson (includes board and rash vest) will cost about 400 pesos ($40 Canadian at the time). This beach is in a shallow bay but has wave points to suit beginners, intermediates and perhaps even experts.
The locals are typically friendly Mexicans and several ex-pat surf bums (meant to be a term of envy). There are some restaurants on the beach that will let you rent a chair and umbrella for about 100 pesos a day. For that price, you will have a guy stand on the beach and keep an eye on your stuff (cameras for example) while you are out surfing.
Less English is spoken here so it can't hurt to bone up on your Spanish.
Totally awesome place and the view of the tiny bay with the gorgeous houses built along the cliffs....so picturesque!
