“Perfect place for relaxing-- with great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

First off, if you equate excellence with grand fountains and marble columns upon entry into your 5 star resort, this is not your place. If you prefer low key, 'open' rooms with the sound of the ocean right out your window, the friendliest customer service imaginable, a truly unique jungle/beach setting, and a place with really good food, Playa Escondida is your place. First off, let me give the counterpoint to bocasdude's opinion on the food-- we ate 75% of our meals at Playa Escondida, mostly consisting of more local cuisine, and without exception, they were fantastastic. Of particular note was the Pork Pasole and the Lobster. Truly one of the best meals we've had in Mexico, which we've been visiting for over 25 years. Shortly before our arrival Jennifer had just been put in charge of the restaurant and it is clear this is a point of pride for her. I believe she is now in charge of more than just the restaurant, which certainly can't hurt the overall appeal of this place as Jennifer is clearly a very knowledgeable, engaging, and service oriented manager. There were several others we met during our stay who really made us feel at home, including Jose, Jorge, Tony, and all the lovely ladies at the front desk. We will certainly be back to enjoy the incredible hospitality of fine people at Playa Escondida!

“Simply AMAZING!!!!”

I have just returned from paradise! Playa Escondida is truly amazing. The rooms are charming and designed so that you feel as if you are outside, even when you are not. They have amazing views of the jungle or beach, depending on the room, and lots of open windows and doors, bringing all that beauty right into your room.

The infinity pool overlooking the private beach was to die for! The food was wonderful and the staff gave great recommendations on what to pick. The ceviche was especially fresh and incredible! We also got to experience a massage from Eva(Ava?) that literally was the best massage my husband and I have ever had. And we went horseback riding with Samuel on a beautiful deserted beach and through the jungle on the most gentle horses.

The staff here were all friendly, gracious, and accommodating. By all, I mean every single one of them went out of their way to ensure that we were happy and content. Two particular stand outs were Tony and Jorge. Tony, at the front desk, took care of every little detail for us, sometimes going above and beyond what was expected. And Jorge, well, he just might be the best bartender (and smoothie maker) in all of Mexico. I was actually sad to leave all the people I met there!

What more can I say? An exceptionally beautiful property with a top notch staff! I'll be back!

First I must say this is a beautiful hotel, wonderful beach with superb views. The front desk staff were a pleasure. Our first night we tried the on site restuaunt, what a disaster.I ordered a USDA steak,my wife a rack of New Zealand lamb.My steak was over cooked, and tough. My wifes lamb raw,and brussel sprouts hard,(undercooked).By the time my wifes meal was re served I was finished with mine,so we saw no reason to eat in shifts, and requested our check. The waitress actualy tried to charge us for a totaly un touched dinner, finaly she relented and removed her dinner from the check.Next day we scheduled massages.I got the masseus, she was excellent,my wife got the pedicurest her massage was terrible.Following afternoon at lunch I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich, simple right? After a 20 minute wait I was served a dry turkey sandwich.I was so hungry I ate it anyway. They didnt charge for the sandwich, nor the massage.Money wasnt the issue, the service was..The town is an $8 taxi ride each way.So if staying here be prepared to go to town to eat.Unless of couse you like poorly cooked food.

We are very sorry that you did not have the perfect experience that most of our guests enjoy. Thank you for taking the time to share your criticism and to help us to improve.

Our restaurant has been praised by many chefs, restaurateurs, foodies and gourmets, however, even the best have bad days. At our restaurant the day in question was difficult for us, as family emergencies resulted in insufficient staff and may have led to the fact that your rack was undercooked and steak overcooked. The New York steak we serve is Certified Angus imported from the U.S. and is usually well marbled and quite tender as opposed to our selection from Sonora which is leaner and less tender but healthier. In any case we never hesitate to change the dish for our guests in the unlikely event they are dissatisfied for any reason. We are sincerely sorry for your discontent with your meals and are now using meat thermometers as a result of your observations. As for the sandwich, I must admit that we are not Katz’s nor Greenblatt’s but we do use the best ingredients possible which, unfortunately, were not in stock on the day you ordered.

Massages are often a matter of personal taste as well. Many of our guests with extensive spa experience attest to both Elsie’s and Eva’s massages as being the best in their experience. We understand that your wife’s medical condition may have been a factor but, honestly, complaints have been extremely rare.

We hope you will return and promise you a better experience next time!

“Hidden Gem...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

After staying three nights in the small town of San Pancho, My friends (two couples) and I wanted to stay somewhere on the beach. We had heard of the Harama Yoga Retreat Center next door. As we toured the facilities at Harama, we stumbled upon the private beach of Playa Escondida. The bartender, Jorge, was extremely friendly and made excellent (and strong) drinks. He suggested we ask the front desk if there were any rooms available. Luckily there were.

It is a beautiful boutique hotel with a great location...hidden away from Suyalita town and the crowds. The staff (from the restaurant to the front desk) was very accommodating and attentive. The front desk rep even made sure she said "Adios" when we left for the airport. Very friendly staff!

The restaurant was great (my boyfriend and I loved the chicken Mole). Although it is close to the pool. But no one was using the pool the times we ate lunch, dinner. The hotel also gave us a $200 USD credit which was an added incentive. As for the spa, Eva was great as she gave me a very relaxing massage over looking the ocean.

The only downside to this hotel, is the fact that many of the rooms (we were in the Cabana bungalow) are in the midst of the jungle...and have no windows or screens. So it's very much like camping outdoors with a bed and bathroom. One morning I even found a small tree frog in our shower. And although many of the staff insisted that January wasn't the season for mosquitoes, my legs and back were covered in bug bites. Also, the Cabana we stayed in was very dark and could have used a better cleaning in the shower. There were mold stains on the shower walls. I preferred showering in the spa shower as there was better lighting and no mold.

But overall, it was worth the bug bites...getting to have our own private beach and beautiful views. I would come again...but would bring bug spray and ask for a more enclosed room with better lighting. I heard Villa 4 is just that.

Room Tip: Villa 4 is better enclosed during mosquito season
