My husband made the reservations at this hotel due to the fact that we were coming to Hannibal for his class reunion. Let me start by stating that we are accustomed to staying in Marriott properties due to his business travels, so I wasn't expecting much from this hotel. However, what we found upon check-in is beyond words!
We had mad reservations for a room with two double beds since our son was traveling with us. Upon arrival, we were given a room with one double bed and were told that was all they had and that was what we had requested. Wrong! So, we decided to go down to the room anyway figuring we didn't have much of an option. Immediately upon opening the door, a smell of smoke, alcohol and not sure what else comes blasting out of the room. The smell was almost unbearable. At that time, I went back up to the front desk and told them that the smell was unacceptable, only to be told once again that there was nothing they could do. No other rooms available to switch us. So . . . I go back down again, figuring I would just tough it out for one night. We begin unloading our car and luggage, and I notice that the carpet throughout the entire room was soaking wet (as if it had just been shampooed). Then I went to set our suitcase down on the luggage stand in the room, and I notice several small spiders climbing around on the wall. At this point I begin to panic and to investigate the room thoroughly. Apparently, there was some sort of infestation by the spiders, and we counted thirty on the walls, ceilings and elsewhere. A tour of the bathroom uncovered several small rollie pollie looking bugs in the shower, and then to top it all off, there was mold (not just a little either) growing along side the bed on the carpet that went up the side of the wall. Crazy. At this point I decide no way am I staying at this joint. We haul all of our luggage back to the car; head to the front desk and tell the clerk enough is enough and are on our way. Fortunately, we were able to get a room at the Hannibal Inn (which is another story), but at least it wasn't infested with spiders and mold!
A word of warning to travelers. If you have any kind of allergies I would not recommend this place. The mold can be a health hazard. I am sure the spiders could be too. Not sure if they were the type that can cause harm, but if I want to sleep with spiders, I plan on being in a tent out in a field somewhere!!!!
