I traveled to St. Louis in the middle of April for a rare surgery that required me to be in the area for over a week after the procedure. After initially recovering at a more expensive hotel right next to the hospital, I was able to move to a less expensive location for my recovery. We carefully researched the area, and this hotel had the right mix that we were looking for, i.e. kitchen two queen beds, internet service, etc. We even stopped by before checking in, and the lobby of the hotel was decent, and for the rate the facility looked in decent shape.
We regret staying here for the following reasons:
1. Internet. The hotel states they offer highspeed wireless service for a small fee. Even though I was recovering, I still needed to get work done and be productive away from home. After several days of extremely slow speed (about the speed of dial-up) I discovered the problem. The entire hotel is on a 768K DSL line, with a good portion of it being used for hotel communications. The fastest speed I ever got was about 200K, which means it took almost 10 minutes to download a presentation off my email. Youtube, Netflix, WebEx - FORGET IT. I could not work efficiently at all. Worst of all, Hotel manager lied to my face about this
2. Cleaning. We stayed here over a week, and you are offered a cleaning service once for the week. We picked a day a few after we arrived, and the cleaning staff arrived at 8am while i was on a call with co-workers in Ireland. I asked for them to come back later, which they refused, and I politely asked the management if we could reschedule. They said it would not be a problem, but the cleaners never came.
3. Other guests. The hotel was generally quite, but occaisionally another guest would shout or there would be loud banging on the walls. It did not make for a comfortable stay.
4. General Service. Management and front desk personnel at this hotel do one of two things, they either lie to your face or feign an inability to help you. Trash in the parking lot? We'll take care of it! No they didn't, we had to pick up the trash. Similar with the internet, cleaning, and other small items.
Next time I will be spending the extra $5/$10 a day and get a real hotel.
