“Comfortable and convenient.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2009

I graduated in 2004 from Mizzou. Every time I've been back since, I've stayed at The Regency b/c it was walking distance to everything. It's gross and overpriced, but we all do it because of it's location. Well, I couldn't do it any longer, so I decided to try out this B&B that I used to always drive by when I lived here. Anyway, it was great. Private rooms, private bathrooms, in walking distance to the bars and the stadium, and the breakfast was delicious. The innkeepers were friendly but not annoyingly friendly. I will definitely be returning.

“I would stay here again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 April 2009

I found the University Ave, B&B to be everything it was advertised as. Mizzou and downtown Columbia easy to get to on foot. The food was delicious, portions ample. While the room was dated, it was very clean and comfortable. I felt like I got a good value for my dollar.
I wish Kathy and Brian the best.

“Not even if it's the last room in town....”

We knew when we entered from the pouring rain that things were not as we were led to believe from the printed description. Quaint and full of antiques really meant musty and worn out. The innkeepers made us feel like intruders, not welcome guests. Hospitality was lacking, as was the air-conditioning on the second floor. No consideration of our request for an early breakfast...and the complimentary box of chocolates was missing a piece! When asked if they enjoyed the business, their response told us they need to find a new job....Of all
the B&B's I have stayed in, this one rates among the worst.

  • Liked — Proximity to University
  • Disliked — The innkeepers, the musty smell, high cost for no services

“Strange Advertising”

My partner & I were looking for a nice B&B close to the university, to stay in for a few days while we helped my son relocate to Columbia for graduate school. According to my research, this area of Missouri is known for its wineries, so we planned to stick around and sample some of the local specialties. The University Avenue B&B is listed on a B&B web site as on "The Wine Road". Imagine our surprise when we tried to book 3 nights at this B&B and when confirming the reservation by phone, were told alcohol is not permitted ! In fact, the owner went so far as to tell us he wouldn't even supply us with glasses or a corkscrew if we tried to sneak a drink on the patio....I really think this B&B should be listed under special "Temperance Accommodations" . Needless to say, we cancelled the reservation and found a place more hospitable to vacationing guests.

My response to the Trip Advisor review on July 23rd 2007-
I hope I can make this very clear to all travelers. Keeping in mind that most B&B’s are private homes and the innkeepers live there; understanding their policies is very important before you as a guest should finalize a reservation with a B&B.
All of our policies are outlined very clearly on our website. There is nothing hidden, secretive or misleading about any of them.
If possible when planning your trip, do yourself and the innkeeper the courtesy of knowing the B&B’s policies beforehand. Then you as a guest will know whether you would be happy there or not. If you don’t have information about their policies via the internet or a brochure, call them.
If after you have reviewed them you still have questions; ask the innkeeper but don’t be pushy, argumentative or rude about any one particular thing. If you don’t agree with a certain policy, chances are you won’t be happy staying there and either ask for recommendations of places that might fit your lifestyle or end the conversation with the innkeeper.
As for the report that we are listed on some wine trail…I have not found any such website, if I did, I would ask them to remove us. I would have figured that we would have been removed a long time ago anyway since we do not pay any advertising to a company who lists us on some ‘Wine Trails’.
Maybe if this reviewer would do us a courtesy and send us information about it; we can contact this company to be removed from their listing.
I would assume that this is a situation where the previous owners did not do their job in canceling all there advertising accounts when they sold the B&B to my wife and me back in December of 2005.
We have had guests come and stay here who still brought alcohol and all the accessories for drinking it. We have asked them to please consume it outside since it is not allowed inside. Most are very happy to oblige, which is not hard to understand when why would anyone want to sit in a guest room to drink when it is a beautiful day outside.

“Kind of an odd duck...”

For the $100 we spent to stay here, this place was definitely not worth the money. Although Columbia doesn't have much--or anything-- to offer in the way of high-end hotel accommodations, this B & B doesn't do anything to fill the gap. The room was simple and kitschy, as many faux 'antiquey' bed and breakfasts are. The proprietors were accommodating, but you are definitely in the bible belt here, with admonitions against having any alcohol in the room and a request to check out 1/2 hour early on Sunday mornings so that the innkeepers can attend church on time. If you're comfortable with this, go for it. It felt a bit creepy to us, and we were relieved to be out of there. We were in Columbia for a quick visit to the Mizzou campus (conveniently located just across the street), but the idea of anyone actually going to this place for a romantic or 'luxurious' getaway seems a bit odd...

  • Liked — located very close to Mizzou campus
  • Disliked — off-putting feel of the place

My comments about the Trip Advisor review on April 27th 2007-
In the response to this guest, and I’m referencing their comment about having to check out early on Sunday, we had no idea we would later become victims of bigotry comments towards us because we are Christians and would like to be able to attend church, preferably on time.
Especially since we thought this guest was a very wonderful guest; pleasant, kind and the type who prefers B&B’s over hotels. It is not uncommon for owners of B&B’s to request that a guest check out early on Sundays.
In regards to our ‘No Alcohol’, yes we do not want alcohol in our home. It’s our home, our business and our policy. If a guest wants to drink inside a B&B, we are more than happy to recommend a few B&B’s in the area that gladly allow it. They just need to ask.
