My sister and I decided to give our mother a bit of a break over Christmas by staying at a hotel together in Clayton rather than at her house, and we chose this one because of its low-cost price for a double room that included free breakfast and parking. Unfortunately the hotel costs less than others of its class in this area because it its struggling with aging buildings and the facilities aren't really up to par. We received a free upgrade to an updated non-tower room which did have the pergo flooring; other attempts at redecorating include, slippery marble bathrooms, lots of flashy crystal chandeliers and florid wallpaper--I think they may have hired the same decorator who made over Jed Clampett's mansion in "The Beverly Hillbillies." Everything was very clean in our room and the beds were new and comfortable, but the first real sign of trouble was the seemingly thoughtful "sleep kit" on the bed, including lavender pillow spray, an eye mask and EAR PLUGS. Just as we were drifting off to sleep at about 11:30, our neighbors returned to their room and proceded to stage a late night family reunion, with lots of loud talking and frequent bouts of screaming, cackling laughter. At about 12:30 we finally called the front desk and asked if someone could contact them and ask them to quiet down, but after 30 minutes the party was still roaring along. A second call finally summoned security, and guests not staying in that particular room were dispersed to their own quarters, but the room's two occupants continued to laugh and reminisce until about 2 in the morning, and we could hear every word they said. The next morning we asked to move to a room without a connecting door, far away from this family, and these measures did help with the noise (though it took some persuading to convince the desk staff to make the change, and their computer system was down!), but there wasn't much we could do the next night when a little boy decided to have a screaming Christas meltdown with his parents in the hallway at midnight. Our new room had added problems of a quirky electrical system that gave one about a 50% chance of being able to use the hairdryer or coffee maker at any given time; it also came with a broken remote that took two requests to get replaced (it also took two requests to get a second bathrobe for the room, and even then the second robe came with no belt!).
Regarding other facilities--the pool is half-indoors, half-outdoors, and while it is heated, it's probably not going to be warm enough for most adults in the winter months (no spa). The breakfast buffet was great on the weekends, when both hot and cold food is out, but on weekdays only cold food and an omelet bar are available. While the omelets were delicious, the weekday chef isn't very friendly or service oriented. One day, we waited 10-15 minutes while we were told he was "getting the soup" for lunch, which puzzled us because it was 9am and it seemed like he would have plenty of time to obtain soup after breakfast service; he finally emerged (soupless) down the hallway outside of the restaurant where the bathrooms were located. The next day, I walked up to his station and told him I'd like to order an omelet, and he answered "unfortunately." I stood there scratching my head for a couple of minutes as to what that could mean, while he returned to complaining about something to another member of the staff. Finally he turned back to me and gruffly took my order, adding that someone would bring it out to my table when it was ready. Merry Christmas!
The last bit of weirdness occurred when we checked out--suddenly, despite our parking-included rate, we had two days of parking charged to our bill! The clerk tried one way and then another to justify this charge--well it was for the day before our first night (we arrived at 10pm!) or for that morning--or how about if she cut the charge in half? After several minutes of debate the chage was finally removed from our bill.
I would consider staying at this hotel again, but I would probably try to find a better deal on Priceline first.
Room Tip: Perhaps the Tower rooms are quieter--considering the noise on other levels, for ten bucks it is wort...
