“Not good. Not bad.”
Magnolia Inn & Suites was not a good stay. It was not a bad stay. Very average...but you get what you pay for.
The bed was VERY springy. Very springy. I could feel the springs poking through the fabric and it was a very loud bed. Any movement I made resulted in springs making a "boing" sound.
The shower was also very difficult to use. The only shower head was the kind you hold in your hand, and there was no place to mount it on the wall, making it very difficult for someone who doesn't usually bathe that way. The towels were stained as well.
The room had a musty smell when we first got inside, but that seemed to get better after we ran the fan on the A/C unit.
To top it off, the manager at checkout told me that if I gave them a five-star review on various websites, that he would mail me a $20 gas card. That's bribery (and I have no idea how he'd know who left the review).
The room had a small microwave and refrigerator (though the fridge was extremely dented, probably from the housekeeping cart). The room had full cable and the TV had an FM radio built in, but the remote control didn't work well. The hotel said they offered WiFi, but all of the available networks required a password. I didn't feel like bothering the front desk to find it out, so I just lived without the web.
On the good side, it was in a very convenient location, just off Interstate 55. 10 minutes from downtown Memphis and 20 minutes from the Tunica casinos. Hotel is directly across from the Desoto Civic Center. There is a Waffle House, McDonald's, and Taco Bell within walking distance. There is a large shopping/dining area one exit away (2 miles north).
The hotel is very small, and the service staff was friendly. The room is small, but the bathroom is spacious. They offered a continental breakfast, but I did not try it.
I probably wouldn't recommend this motel, but it's not an "avoid at all costs" spot. There are many more attractive options in the nearby area, however. Magnolia offered a decent price on a Saturday night, so if you're cost-conscious, just looking for a place to crash, and don't mind quality taking a back seat, then Magnolia is adequate.
