“Would not repeat this trip”

Recently returned from a trip that was not what we expected. Granted our trip was greatly discounted but not free. There is very little information or direction given to you regarding this trip. First, there are three hotels. The Casino Tower, The Veranda and The Terrace. You must take a shuttle to the actual casino from both the Veranda and the Terrace. There was no mention of this. Second, they advertise they have an indoor pool and exercise facility. The exercise room is in the Terrace Hotel along with the spa which is overpriced. The exercise facility costs $5 a day. I feel in the amenities, this should have been listed as "for a fee". Also, the indoor pool is located in the Casino Tower so if you are in one of the other hotels, you must take the shuttle to that hotel for pool use. Also not mentioned. Another surprise was internet access is $11.95 per device per day. So, IPAD and Laptop woyuld cost you $24. There is a business center and I believe computer use there is $3 per use. We had an elderly relative with us and the walking/shuttles were quite difficult. They do have scooter rental for $38 per day. We were fortunate that a patron of the casino explained some casino amenities to us as these were not explained by staff. Upon leaving this trip, many patrons were not aware of these amenities. All drinks are free but must be ordered electronically off the machine,. You may only order one drink and the sodas are quite small. Service is varied. If you tip, they will come. The patron explained that we could go to promotions are receive comp'd meals. Thankfully. Many of the other guests were not aware of this and paid $$$$ for food. For instance one elderly gentleman and his guest paid $58 per piece for Paula Deen Sat night buffet. This was comped if you knew to ask. But as stated earlier, casino not forthcoming with this information. Finally, there are no taxis or shuttles to other casinos. There is a service you can get but its like pulling teeth to get that info. Front desk said there were no services, however valet provided limited info but quietly. On a positive note, rooms were clean. They were a little "worn" but nice. Fridge in room. Shuttle drivers were quite nice. Bring lots of $1, as there is ample opportunity for tipping. I wish I had known some of this prior to the trip, Given offer again, I would decline. Harrahs, truth or at least upfront information goes a long way.

Room Tip: If you have elderly, request casino tower and do not expect "hot tub" or anything for achy...

“Tunica revisited”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We visited Tunica in January 2012, even after a less-than-satisfactory visit there a year before. We're glad we did. My, what an improvement!

Especially improved was the hospitality at Harrah's Casino. On our first visit, we felt like casino staff really didn't care if we were there or not. This time, it was a complete turnaround. Great table dealers, pleasant bartenders, super service.

During such a visit, the room may be the least important thing. But it was nice, clean, and comfy. The shuttles between hotels and casinos is very good with little waiting on either end.

Good job Tunica!

“Shuttle service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We just returned from a three day trip to Tunica through Harrah's rewards. We stayed at the Veranda and it was nice. The workers were not at all friendly. The rooms were nice and also clean. The elevator worked fine.

Now, for the biggest gripe. The Shuttle service is just awful. Do not stay anyplace away from Harrah's casino as your wait could be 3o minutes. They advertise 10- 15 minutes which is fine if the shuttle is not full. (only holds around 25 people...not allowed to stand up or sit on laps). We waited for three shuttles before we could get on. I spent more time waiting for shuttles than I did in the casino. We ate at Paula Deans buffet and it was great,

Would I go to Tunica again. Never.... I would try Laughin. However, I did win on Video Poker and came home with more money than I took.

Good Luck and I hope you read this review. No more shuttles for me.....it was chilly waiting for the shuttle .

Room Tip: Stay in the Towers only.

“Lovely Property and Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Harrah's owns a lot of land in Tunica. And, be advised that the Veranda is not attached to the casino. One has to take a shuttle. Which is OK sometimes. I like to go to the casino early morning when there are few people around. Can't do that here - well, one would have to walk quite a bit. Nonetheless, the room was wondereful. And the bed and pillows - terrific. The only negative is one could hear the neighbors through the walls. Every showeer and every flush, and mumbled conversations. Nice fireplace in the lobby, too. Also in the lobby is a small bar with HD TV and a small food service. There is coffee available in each room. Forget Wi-Fi - it will cost you. I think it was $15 per day. There is no free Wi-Fi anywhere on the property. I wanted to eat at Paula Deen's buffet, but when I saw the price I decided I could do better. I did at Sam's Town. Harrfah's also owns two additional properties next to each other - The Roadhouse ( No buffet ) which has a fun cowboy theme, and The Horseshoe ( nice buffet ). Again, one does not have to drive, just hop on the shuttle.

Room Tip: I think any room would be OK. However, I chose the back side of the hotel and away from the elevato...

“Nice hotel if you enjoy smoking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

My husband I took a junket to Tunica and was assigned the Veranda hotel. On the plus side it is a lovely spacious southern hotel. The sunken lobby is lovely with two fireplaces going all the time. There are comfy couches and lots of chairs to relax here. There is a small service area that offers coffee, sandwiches, bagels(toast your own), and other treats with very limited hours. Now if you want to go to the nearest casino Harrah's there is a shuttle that comes frequently. You can also rent a car like we did and drive over about one mile. Regarding the room it was nice decor all done in mahogany southern colors. There was a glass door that has a tiny balcony area, but when we visited they were sealed shut. Now here come the down side. For all of you that hate smoking, stay out of Tunica and Memphis. There is smoking everywhere! They even have ashtrays in the lobby of the Veranda hotel!! So as I was trying to eat my yummy pecan roll, some guys just started to light up by me. Yuck! The casinos are the same way folks filled with smoke. There are cigarette machines everywhere in the casinos. Now, my husband smokes so I am not a snob , however it would not be a place that I would bring a non-smoking person. So what do you do in Tunica? Eat...and gamble. There really is nothing other than several areas of casino's lumped together. We like to get the local view so we rented a car and went to Graceland. I highty reccomend the tour. You walk through the house and see all the grounds and of course the graves. Anyone would love to see Graceland.A 30 min drive from this hotel. Another road trip was to downtown Memphis to eat barbeque at the Rendevous a famous place for it. It is close to Union Ave and Bealle street. Bealle street is also cool, closed off for walking. It hosts all the bars and Jazz clubs like BB Kings place. There is also guys with horse and buggy's that give you a great ride around the area of Bealle street, so please hope on and go to Gus's famous fried chicken place. The buggy ride is cool and the guy running it is super nice. You can also go into the Peabody hotel. We did not see any ducks, however it is lovely and the shops there are super expensive and have lovely items. So just remember to not ask for "Gingerale", in Memphis. I was told by an elderly waiter that "down here we serve Sprite". Coming from Pittsburgh this was a different pace of life and overall I enjoyed and appreciated the differences. Regarding the food, for all you out there wanting a good salad.....forget it. All the places have big southern buffets like the outstanding Paula Deen one at Harrah's. It has all the southern foods that one can imagine and more. My suggestion is to eat breakfast there, and go lighter for dinner. Oh, there is an Asian place called "noodles" at the Horsehoe Casino . We loved the food there, and did not want to eat buffets all the time. The reason I give a four rating is that the paint on the balcony outside was peeling terribly and also I do not see the need to have smoking in a lobby area. For all you asmatics out there, do not forget your breathing devices when you go to this town.
