Our family of 6 (2 adults, 2 teens and 2 elementary schoolers) were driving from Texas to Florida and needed a place for all of us to stay in Jackson, MS. The Quality Inn and Suites in downtown Jackson seemed like a great deal...only $80 for 2 queen beds and a pullout sofa, plus bkfst seemed like a steal. It was easy to find, right off I 55, and not far from I 20 so it seemed great. When we pulled in though, it seemed like not a great neighborhood and the hotel seemed old and rundown. Definitely NOT nearly like the other Quality Inn and Suites we've stayed in before. The first thing we noticed is that the rooms open to the OUTside, instead of nice carpeted and safer hallways. I was not happy about that. The gal at the front desk told me it was 35 years old and I thought, "Bummer". The room was much bigger than I'd expected...one full room with a couch and TV and kitchenette, then another attached full room with two Queen beds and a bathroom. Wow! That was a nice surprise. It did look old for sure, but I thought it was apparent that they make an effort to keep it up. Since two of my kids wanted to sleep on the Coleman air mattresses we brought along, I asked for extra sheets and blankets. When I called the front desk, the gal was unsure if they could give me any. Huh? Also, she could not send any up; I had to go get them myself. She came up with a couple sheets, but no blankets. I thought it was bad that they have NO extra blankets in the entire place. We survived the night, tho. The hairdryer did not work, but we had brought our own. I noticed there were washers and dryers in the bottom level hallway outside right by the parking lot, but one of the washers had an 'Out of Order' sign on it. The elevator worked, but was not nice. There were cracks in the inner decorative walls, and some of the paneling was glued back on. Ick.
Bkfst the next morning was really bad, however. The only gal working at the front desk was also in charge of the bkfst. That is a disaster! On the menu was bagels, muffins and toast, 3 basic cereals, a waffle maker and some biscuits and gravy from a crockpot. No eggs, which was disappointing to my hungry, protein lovin teen boys. The waffle making idea was a good idea, but wasn't so great. They were out of batter after I made one waffle for my family, and I asked the front desk lady to get some more. It took her a long time to get it made...maybe 5 min? There was a small pitcher of syrup, and I tried pouring some in a cup so we could just have some at the table. I soon learned that their little pitcher had a broken handle and I had to rig it up with both hands to get some out. What a mess all over my hands! As soon as the lady came back with the batter, I had to tell her they were out of milk and syrup. Then the OJ was super thick and we didn't drink that, although I didn't mention that to the overworked lady. I felt badly for her! The hotel was very busy and it was ridiculous for one person to both watch the desk and do everything for bkfst, too. The floor had spills on it, but she had no time to think of that. There were several small tables there, and some couches too. One of the upholstered chairs in the couch area was so completely broken and looked like it was really falling over. Not sure what had happened with that, but it looked horrible. I didn't notice there was no Air Conditioning in there, but my husband said he was sweating and there was obviously no A/C.
Driving away, we definitely thought it was sub-par in many areas, but since we had only paid about half of what we often are used to paying for a nicer TownPlaceSuites or a Residence Inn, we thought that was just about right. We got a big room, which was a bonus, but everything else was about half the quality and service. I would only stay there again in a bind. If you're just looking for a basic hotel to stay in, and you don't care about any froo froo stuff, then stay here. Good price for sure and big rooms. If ambiance is important to you, then go elsewhere. Hope this helps somebody! We have used Tripadvisor several times this summer and we deeply appreciate people's honest evaluations, which is why I'm taking the time to write this out while my husband is unpacking our suitcases! :-)
