“Just what we wanted for an extended stay”

We (a senior couple) stayed there in Nov 2011 for 7 nights visiting Winona relatives. The hotel was nowhere full.

Upon checking in, the desk person advised us that she had upgraded us to a two queen suite -- our reservation had been made directly with the facility on-line. The second floor suite was located in a a forward extended portion of the property, which allows them to add a sitting room containing a pullout sofa bed and a second large screen tv (A third and smaller tv was in the bathroom which only can be viewed from the vanity area.) The two sliding door closet was ample, but 6 hangers for 8' or so wide were inadequate -- housekeeping came up with a few more. Drawer space was sufficient.

All the facilities in the bathroom were in first class shape. There were no eroding tiles or signs of patchwork in the suite. Warm water came quickly and steadily. The suite was very clean.

The room itself was very quiet. The four pillows per bed are too large -- why don't hotels offer a choice of varying size and softness rather than have all of the same size and firmness? The housekeeping attendant we met the second day refrained from the tight hotel pack of the bed coverings at our request -- a much more comfortable feel for us. We were there in November and the thermostatically controlled quiet heating system was very reliable, honoring our downward adjustment at bedtime.

Parking space was ample. Complimentary USA Today delivered each day. A nice sitting area is across from the lobby along with a small business center including a computer.

The flat screen tv's do not receive a HD signal from the cable installation. We didn't look for the pool.

The built-in Green Mill restaurant is good and above the general standards of Winona, a blue collar town. We received minor discount coupons for one dinner and for each breakfast. I enjoyed a "petite sirloin" one night which was correctly prepared. On another occasion enjoyed a good pasta meal. Not a gourmet eating establishment, but a reliable source of a comfortable meal.

The wi-fi faded the first night. No problem for the rest of our visit after I mentioned the matter to the front desk the next morning.

All in all we enjoyed our visit and would not hesitate to return. Some years ago we stayed at the badly aged chain hotel just across the highway and had no problem trying a different facility on this trip.

“Comfortable hotel, would recommend!”

We stayed here for one night with our two boys. We had a suite with two queen beds and three tvs (one in the bathroom, which the boys loved). The beds and linens were very clean and comfortable. They had cozy comforters instead of those thin polyester bedspreads found at inexpensive motels. Minor complaint; the pillows were a bit too firm and plump to be comfortable-they did not flatten much when you rested your head on them so your neck was not aligned with the rest of your body. The bathroom was clean and spacious and had two sinks. The hotel was completely booked that evening but the noise level was not bad at all. The front desk staff was young and friendly.

The pool area was nice and fun for the boys. The main pool was rather deep-almost immediately went to 4 feet, which meant our nine year old felt too big for the shallow kiddie pool but could not put his head above water while standing in the large pool. Not a big deal really. Our 5 year old enjoyed the kiddie pool and its slides. We also thought the pools could have been a bit warmer-usually the kids are impervious to cold water but our older child was freezing after about 10 minutes. The hottub was large and comfortably warm.

Our only real complaint was with the attached Green Mill restaurant. We received coupons for free meals for the kids and the adults received a small discount coupon. We asked if we could order our meals to the room but were told that we could not use the free kids coupons if we chose to do that. We went downstairs and there was a wait for a table (it was about 6pm on a Saturday night). We were told it would be about 5 minutes but it was actually 15. Our server was friendly but it was busy and it took over 30 minutes for our food to arrive. This was disappointing because we opted not to order their famous deep dish pizza or calzones becasue they take 30 minutes to come out, and we still had wait that long for a small cheese pizza, a kid's burger, a salad and a sandwich. Then we had to track our server down 10 minutes later becasue he forgotten one order of garlic bread and the salad's bread. Overall, the food was good, but the speed of service was slow. Our server was apologetic and gave us two cookies for dessert for free, which we appreciated.

The next morning for breakfast the restaurant was much less crowded but still seemed understaffed. There were many empty tables but it still took almost 10 minutes to be seated. Only one person seemed to be clearing tables and seating the customers. Then it was about 5 more minutes before we saw our server. The food came out more quickly this time-about 15 minutes. The food was good and again our server was apologetic but rushed.

Overall, we would recommend this hotel but might not eat at the attached Green Mill restaurant again on such a busy night.

“Comfortable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

I spent a week at this hotel for business. During the week the hotel was not especially busy so it made for a peaceful stay. I'm not sure what the atmosphere would be like during the weekend. The rooms were furnished nicely and the room appeared very clean. The hotel has a pool but I did not use it. There is a bar and restaurant attached which made it very convenient. There is also some fast food and convenience stores within walking distance. The hotel is situated a little ways from downtown requiring transportation to get there. All of the sites personnel were very nice and efficient. The only gripe I would have is it seemed like the meals were a little expensive but that with said there were quite a few locals dining here. This is not the newest hotel in the area however seems to be maintained very well. I would gladly stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Some rooms have in room hot tubs. Ground floor rooms have outside patios.

“Nice hotel, would stay again.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

My husband and I were traveling through Winona on our way to visit relatives and decided to stop and visit the college in Winona where I had attended school years earlier. We had no reservations, so just parked and walked in. The receptionist was very friendly and gave us a very good rate on a room with a king bed. She also gave us discount coupons for dinner and breakfast in the attached restaurant. The wifi was free in worked well in the room.
The room was spacious, clean and quiet. We ate a nice dinner (nothing fancy, but good and more than plentiful!) The bed was very comfortable and the shower was hot with good pressure. Even though the hotel was pretty filled, our room was quiet.
The location was good for us since we were able to get right back on the highway to Iowa to visit my in-laws.

Room Tip: We showed our AAA cards to get a better rate.

“Great hotel and service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

Our family stayed at the Plaza Hotel in Winona while on a road trip. Winona is a great little town with spectacular scenery, including the Mississippi River which goes right through town. We decided to stay there at the last minute - called at 5:30 and they immediately booked us into a family suite on the 4th floor.

Big room, very clean - separate living area with a couch that had a pull out bed, desk, big screen TV and french doors separating that area from the bedroom which had 2 queen beds and a TV. Coffee maker and refrigerator were handy to have. The beds had very cozy linens and comforters vs. the Velux blankets and scratchy bedspreads you often find. I thought the bed was too hard - my husband thought it was just right and didn't want to get out of it the next morning! The bathroom was huge and had a TV in it, which our kids found fascinating. Nice pool area.

The hotel is just off a main road and it was almost completely booked, but you'd never know it - very quiet. The Green Mill restaurant is in the hotel and we had a delicious breakfast there at reasonable prices. The staff was professional and courteous. We'd definitely stay at this hotel again.
