“Stayed New Years Eve for a Wedding”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed at Grand Superior Lodge two nights over New Year's weekend to attend a wedding. For the most part the hotel is very nice and the staff was friendly. The view overlooking the lake is wonderful and it's very close to Gooseberry Falls. We had a great view of the lake from our room. They have a nice pool area, which the kids loved. The bar/restaurant is nice, staff was very friendly. Food is overpriced though. No continental breakfast available. I did have a few issues with the hotel however....
- The pillows are not comfortable and were like sleeping on a sack of cement. My neck was sore all weekend as a result. If you stay, bring your own pillow from home.
- The bed in the lodge was very, very firm. Some people like a firm bed, but it was too hard for my liking.
- Upon booking for the hotel, I was quoted a higher rate different from the rate quoted for the wedding guests.
- The food for the wedding was at least 30 minutes late. The wedding party was left standing around while waiting for the food. Guests were complaining about being hungry and asking why the food was not ready. This was a disappointment.
- The hotel promised heat lamps would be provided for the outdoor wedding ceremony, but failed to put them out. The wedding ceremony was outside on New Year's Eve. Despite the mild winter, it was still COLD outside. Another disappoinment.
- Our hotel room was right above the ballroom, so it was extremely loud in our room. Impossible to put children down to sleep at a decent hour.
- The toilet in our room was clogged. It took over 2 hours for the maintenance person to fix the issue, after we reported it twice. They apologized for the miscommunication error on their part.
- The bathroom fan in the room was extremely loud and needs to be replaced. As high as the rates are, I feel they could easily replace a simple bathroom fan.
- Upon making reservations, I was informed this was a pet-free hotel. However, two rooms had dogs in them.
Overall, the hotel was fine, but I would not stay again due to the high rates.

“Great choice to relax on the shore!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Right when checked in we knew it was going to be great, everyone who we came in contact with was more than pleasant to us. They did a great job making sure we were happy and they so many options to take advantage of, the Blu Ice bar was really unique, with lots of unique drink choices, we tried the "Hot Appple Pie" it was a perfect choice to stay warm, we found a spot outside at one of two large outside bonfires, met some great people and enjoyed the view from ice bar!

The grounds are nicely maintained, even when it snowed they were quick to clear the pathways. Great little ice skating pond that was lit with Christmas lights, smores and a bonfire every night. Wish we could have been able to use the snow shoes they offer guests, but I'll take the unusual warm winter weather. Great places to bring the kids with the free wi-fi, pool, hot tub and game room.

The only issue we had was New Years Eve....we went back to the cabin early to enjoy a quiet night, figured we would order a pizza from the lodge and enjoy our lake views for new years, after waiting almost an hour they called to let us know with the busy dinner for new years, they had burned our pizza. We ended up waiting nearly two hours to eat.

The next morning we went to the lounge and ended up meeting the manager Andrew, who already knew when he saw us about the mistake and was genuinely sorry, he gave us a round of drinks and two of the chefs came out to say hi and both were again sincere about what happened.

Great place, definitely coming back!

Room Tip: We chose a studio log cabin, it was perfect for just us! The view was amazing, it was cozy with the...

“Better to pay for the upgrade”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Hubby and I went away for two nights and I had made reservations for a guest room via the phone, making sure there was in fact a lakeview. Upon check-in on Friday, I double-checked with the concierge that there was a lakeview. She confirmed there was. I hadn't realized that the one foot by one foot window showing a sliver of the lake was the lakeview I had requested. the other three windows of our room faced a parking lot. Already irritated, it didn't help that the room is very tight quarters though once the fireplace was on, it felt cozy enough. This room was nicely decorated with a small flat screen tv and an ipod docking station. The walls, however, are paper thin and the couple staying next door clearly were enjoying themselves and we could hear every sentence of their conversation (or lack thereof). The next morning I asked for more pillows at the front desk and informed them that I was disappointed in the lack of lakeview. The new woman working there immediately searched for an upgrade for me at no extra charge and we were given a new room, a lakeview suite. It was great! The view was unparralleled and the room was romantic. I would definitely only go back there if I were staying in the upgraded room. And the lodge is on a stunning part of the shoreline. Ironically, the upgraded room had a downgrade in technology with only basic cable instead of satellite tv and no flat screen (an old dorm room size tv) and a tape cassette player/radio. Go figure! Also, if you're staying here, DO NOT bother with the Splashing Rock Restaurant, it is terrible. Instead go to the Rustic Inn down the street, ten times better!

“Not fun”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

From day one. We were in the main lodge and were givin the wrong room with out correction after asking.n The room was book for three days and they only had us down for two. We couldn't even drink it away as the bar resteront closed at 11. At chech out were we charged for three days not the twodays that shorted vacation. The charges have not been corrected. After showing them I was charged twice, once for depsite at booking and again at check out, they can not find there record of it. Stay away from this place. The only thing it had going for it was it's on the greatest lake in the world. Stayed in a cabin ith a freinds for the last day and they are no better than the lodge.

Room Tip: non of them cabins or lodge.

“Beautiful and modern, with a rustic feel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Really enjoyed two of our three nights in a lodge suite here. We appreciated the clean, modern room without sacrificing a rustic "North Shore" feeling. Also enjoyed the whirlpools...both the one in the room (especially nice with the gas fireplace!) and the huge one in the lower level by the pool and sauna. Would have used the bikes if the weather had been a bit more cooperative.

Only downside was that the front desk didn't seem to know what to do about the fact the a fallen tree knocked out the power on our first night. At check in we were told that we couldn't have dinner in the dining room because the kitchen had been forced to close, and we had to make our way through totally blacked out hallways to a totally dark room with no water. It's understandable that things like this happen from time to time, so in the future it would help if the front desk apologetically acknowledged the inconvenience, and perhaps offered a flashlight and bottled water to guests.

Happily, after the power was restored the remainder of our stay was so lovely that we have no hesitancy in recommending the resort. In fact, because of the power outage we went across the street to the Rustic Inn for dinner, which turned out to be a real "find". We ended up eating four meals there because the food was so special...fabulous!

All in all, Grand Superior Lodge a great base for exploring the lower portion of the North Shore.
