We stayed for a night while skiing at Lutsen Mountains. Rooms clean and comfortable. Pool was clean and inviting. Everything worked as it is supposed to. Lobby very comfortable and large. Included breakfast was a treat for every one. Best of all... great value. I will stay there again.

Loved the Americinn in Tofte! This is our 5th time staying here and each time is getting better. We joined their Preferred Customer program and received a "free upgrade upon check in". We had a double standard room upgraded to a double queen suite with in room hot tub. The breakfast was great and the lounge was super comfortable--we sat downstairs had a complimentary cup of tea and read the complimentary local paper by the stone fireplace on the plush leather couches. Ahhhh! We did not want to leave but at least we will definitely be back!

The AmericInn in Tofte MN is typical US roadside motel. It is located across the 2-lane highway from Lake Superior but does not offer views of the lake. Our room was simple and clean, showed a bit of wear and tear, but definitely was good value for the money spent. The room price included wireless Internet service, continental breakfast, and use of the lobby with its inviting gas fireplace. Note: our ATT/Cingular cell phone would not work in Tofte. It felt very unusual to be without cell coverage.

There is a wonderful restaurant called the Bluefin located just across the street. In busy season, reservations would be necessary.

Because of good service and good value during our initial stay, we made a reservation to go back to the AmericInn in Tofte a week later after our planned canoe trip. When arrived a week later we learned that Internet service to the hotel had been disabled due to a lightning strike two days earlier. Even though it was after the no-refunds hour, we asked to change to a different property in order to have Internet access. Staff obliged and found us other accommodations.

We had stayed in this motel in the past, but it was a newer motel on our last visit. The front desk said it is to be remodeled in the future. The personnel at the front desk were very nice. Breakfast was ok.

I was aware of the smoking policy rooms and missed the policy where pets are able to stay there. So while we were in a room that was nonsmoking; it was close to rooms that were not. We noticed the smoke filled hallways on the day we left since they appear to be airing out these rooms next to us.
Pets (dogs) were left in the room during the day and you could hear them barking. There were areas of lawn I wouldn't walk on since this was a place the owners walked their dogs.

The mattresses were old and the decor outdated so with the future remodeling changes they seem to plan; this might change. The rooms did not appear real clean, but again this could be partial due to the dingy decor. Carpets in the hallways were stained and dirty in some areas of the motel.

I believe we would look to stay at a smoke free/pet free motel on the north shore in the future. We had recently stayed at the Hyatt downtown Chicago and what a difference for just a few dollars more. Nicely decorated, smoke free, new high quality queen mattresses with plush linen and a nice view of the city. We felt we really got a good value for the price we paid for this room.
