“Some high points, but overall disappointing”

We stayed in the Surfside 1 bedroom suite that is owned by Bluefin Bay. It was a birthday from my husband and was a part of the romance package (breakfast included, couples massage, champagne, etc).

The room itself was beautiful, with a 2-person jacuzzi tub and spectacular views of the lake. It was a large room with a wet bar and nicely appointed bathroom.

However, for a resort with this pricetag, we were very disappointed with a number of things. First off, the room we were in shared a building with another condo, which was on top of us. You could hear every single step they took and everytime they closed a door. I felt like I lived in an apartment again! Also, the gas-lit fireplace kept going on and off, it was really annoying and kind of killed the romantic mood. Finally, the heat was definitely on the fritz. It wasn't unbearably cold under the covers, but we had it cranked all the way up to high and it wasn't really warm in the place until the morning we left.

The service was the other part that was really disappointing. The lady at the front desk we spoke with regarding the heat was quite snippy and somewhat rude. And oddly, most of the other people we came in contact with were also quite rude. Not sure why, we were surprised by it.

That being said, the spa was nice and the Bluefin Grille was great. I'd heard great things about this place, but am sad to say that we won't be returning.

“Wonderful and relaxing”

I chose Surfside as the lodging for a short trip to the North Shore to celebrate my first wedding anniversary with my wife. Surfside was a little more expensive than I would have liked to spend since my wife and I live on a budget on a budget but since it was our first anniversary I thought it was worth it. Now on weekends Surfside does require a two night stay for weekends and because of the price that two nights would have cost I chose to book a Sunday Night instead. From what I have heard the North Shore can be kind of busy on the weekends this time of year. Maybe because it was a Sunday and Monday we avoided all of that.

The ammenities at Surfside were amazing. My wife and I stayed in a master suite. It was one very large room with a web bar, king sized bed, double jacuzzi tub, two swiveling reclining chairs, a huge bath room with a shower with two shower heads, The room also had a flat screen TV with Direct TV, a DVD player, as well as a gas fire place. Our room was in the lower level of the town home. It is essentially a walk out basement. with a walk out to lake superior. You are about a 200 foot walk to rocky shore of lake Superior. The entrance to the room is a little odd as you walk directly down stairs to your room and after awhile I figured out the entire town home could be broken up into different sections to accommodate a different number of people. There were people in the unit above us and we were in the lower level. We did hear the occasional footsteps but never any voices. No noise complaints at all. My wife absolutely loved the room and she can't wait to go back. For the price we paid I don't think you can find accommodations with as good a view anywhere in Minnesota let alone many other places. I just can't say enough how wonderful the room was.
On top of the wonderful room the services the resort offered were very nice as well. There was a workout room and pool onsite as well as spa. We also were provided access to the activities at Blue Fin Bay. We took advantage of the free bike rentals as well as the guided hike of Carleton Peak. Our tour guide was Andy and he was great! Since this was our first time in the area he provided us with a lot good background information on the area. He also provided us with local hiking maps so we could go on own self guided hikes in the afternoon.
Overall our experience at Surfside was excellent and we look forward to making a return trip this winter.

“Hike all day - then relax all night”

We have stayed at Surfside twice - and had wonderful experiences on both occassions. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. And its a great location to access trails. This October we did a 14 mile hike along the Superior Hiking Trail. Then it was wonderful to come back to our room, enjoy the sauna and pool in the rec facility, have a great dinner at Bluefin Grille, come back to our room and light the fire and snuggle in bed and watch a movie (which we rented from Surfside - they have a good selection). We were disappointed not to get a massage appointment - be sure to book that way in advance.

Otherwise a wonderful place to stay. Only downside - pretty expensive. You are paying for staying someplace that feels new and modern and has nice amenities.

“I didn't want to leave!”

This was a awesome trip! I was glad we chose Surfside. Our Master suite was big and roomy, the bathroom was the bomb! A 2 headed shower for 2 people. There was a mini bar with all the amenities you needed. We had a jacuzzi but it sorda faced the next door window. It didn't matter we only used it once and spent most times outside. The view with the water was absolutely grand! We stayed for 3 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. We went and golfed at Lake Superior Golf and that golf course was very challenging, 18 holes wasn't enough, we wanted to go back and play more. If your a golfer, bring your clubs and check that place out. The holes and scenery was great! There were so many hiking trails and waterfalls along 61. Beautiful but have your walking shoes on! We ate at Blufin the last few times and wished we would have ate there all the time. I was dissapointed with the sail charter because they gave us the flyer and when I called to book a time they told us they were no longer sailing this year. I was real upset with that, why give us a flyer? Over all we will diffinately be going back sometime with a bit more knowledge on things. It was a bit pricey but there were discounts on the web we found and beings we went late summer knocked the room price almost in half. The only time I felt a bit uncomfortable was when I went to blufin check in to get my discount on my golf and the older lady acted like she had no time for me and was quite rude about the whole thing.

“Great Honeymoon Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

We stayed at Surfside for our honeymoon and couldn't be happier with our choice. It was a smaller resort right on the water. It was clean and given how close we were to the water it felt like we were at a ocean side resort. The staff was very friendly and the room was a nice size for the price and we would definitely recommend this location to anyone.
