“Overpriced and Sadly Outdated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

In town for our first visit to the college, we wanted to experience the full German flavor of the town. This hotel was probably luxury back in the '70s but it's stuck in that dated tacky era -- not quaint and cozy German. We unfortunately got a room in probably the worst location of the place, down an interior hallway with absolutely no windows except a patio door with a view of a wall. The whole place was generally not bad, just definitely not worth the price compared to the newer hotels popping up everywhere with free breakfast and cleaner, current finishes (decor in our room was not German at all, just ugly and mis-matched). We never got the internet to work in our room (guessing it was due to the location), but was scolded by the desk clerk at checkout for not complaining about it sooner. We did receive a discount at checkout to match the rate we paid the night before at a Comfort Suites in Rochester, but that doesn't change my opinion about paying the same price for this place again in the future. Knock $20-30 off the price and then it might start to be worth it -- or give the place a total overhaul (still keeping the German theme which could be just done so much better), freshening it up to make it worth the price.

“Great hotel with great atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2010

We stayed here with my inlaws and my family of 6 in two rooms midweek. Upon arrival everything in the rooms was as you would expect. We had poolside rooms (glad to see a safety fence between rooms and pool) and loved our little table and chair 'patio' which acted as an extension of our room. Pool was nice and clean (no one had faded suits or red eyes after swimming) As New Ulm has a college, be sure to call early enough for reservations as hotel can sell out quickly depending on college events. Would highly recomend!

This Holiday Inn hasn't been renovated since it was built. And that was a loooooong time ago. It was so bad that I cancelled my next nights' reservations and moved to a remarkably better motel in nearby St.James. This place stinks...literally. The Holiday Inn brand usually has some consistency I can depend on. Not this time. Whoever owns this one simply has no pride in the place. Dirt and musty air do not make it feel more German.

“Good holiday get-away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2009

We had a upper level room overlooking the pool on a Sunday night. Although there was a wedding reception with a DJ in one of the ballrooms, and the poolside rooms had several "parties" set up, we had no problem with noise after 10 PM when the pool closed. If noise is a concern, there are rooms away from the pool and ballrooms as well. Everything was clean. The only problem we had was that in the evening the hot tub was more like a "lukewarm tub". A worker was walking around the pool area and we informed him of the problem. Later on in the evening, when we were at the bar in the hotel, the worker saw us and informed us that the problem was recitfied. The next morning the hot tub was the proper temperature. This temperature issue was the only thing keeping us from giving this hotel a 5 rating. Our AAA rate was fair. The rooms were smaller than new hotels, but not cramped. Also double beds, not queen-sized..

“Atypical experience with Holiday Inn”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2009

We stayed here with other family members while attending a funeral on a week day.

Restraunt service was friendly, however most of the food was cold by the time it arrived to the table. Being in somewhat of a hurry, this was not able to be corrected as despite being one of the only tables in the restraunt, it took nearly 40 minutes to get our 4 breakfast plates.

There is a pool, however, the pool was under construction for the Oktoberfest being held there the following two weekends. This led to increased noise and unfortunately no pool for the other familiy members staying there. It's too bad they did not mention the pool would be out of order when the reservation was made. (The pool was drained, with metal beams running its width as they built a support platform to hold a floor, in my opinion there were not enough safety measures to block off the area and there were no workers around)

The hallways smelled of cigarette smoke, but our room did not. Although difficult, the Holiday Inn did manage to accomodate 3 rooms next to each other so family would be close to one another.

The head of our party was a priority club member (and has ferquented this hotel very often) and had informed them we would be attending a funeral the day of check out and requested a late checkout (1 or 2pm) - utilizing only one of the 3 rooms to hold the luggage (we all had to drive out of town a significant distance and wanted to change clothes). They said it would be no problem and granted the extension. Unfortunately the funeral mass and graveside service ran a little long and as I am sure anyone who has lost a parent understands sometimes things take a little longer and it did. We returned to the hotel (on time) to inform them we would need an additional 30minutes or so as the services ran long and was told this could absolutely not be accomodated as the hotel was full for the night (a Tuesday) and we needed to vacate the room immediately. In a frantic hurry we changed, packed and left the room. Only to find as we were leaving the hotel in fact was not full for the evening yet (confirmed by calling and asking about vacancy and there was plenty at 3pm).

Although we appreciate the extension for check out, it's disappointing that they could not accomodate 30 more minutes for a grieving family. This is especially unfortunate being one of the two bettter hotels in the area and frequented by our family when visiting the area.
