“Planes, Trains and Bad Housekeeping...”

Pros: Right next to the Sawmill which has great food and a fun atmosphere. Plus, it's essentially in the same parking lot so if you tie one on, you can walk back to your hotel.

As others said, microwave and refrigerator in the room is nice, especially to heat up the leftover pizza from the sawmill the night before.

Staff is usually very nice and polite and the breakfast in the morning isn't bad but get there before 8.

Cons: The trains are every 2 hours or so and there is no way to avoid them. The hotel is right next to a crossing so the horns blow every time they approach the intersection. The only advice I can offer is to request a room on the highway side of the hotel as that does help considerably.

My most recent and what will be my last stay, I encountered a giant blood stain on my sheets just as I was about to climb into my bed. And I mean giant, about the size of a basketball. I called to the front desk and the younger gentleman was very nice. He came to the room and eventually left to get a biohazard bag to clear out the blankets and sheets. I complained the next day but the manager wasn't there or wasn't available and I had to leave for golf. Later that night I spoke with the ladies at the front desk and complained to them. They said they had heard about it and that housekeeping was having some serious issues as of late and they were not surprised by my experience. The next morning I was checking out and I spoke with the manager then. She actually had the nerve to accuse me of doing it to get a free room. Yes the rates are high for this area and location but I can swing the $100/nt rate without resorting to some disgusting tactic to get a free room. After a little haggling I was comped my two night stay. Had I been able to change rooms I would have only asked for one night but apparently that was not an option. I was asked not to write any reviews or post the photo of the bedding to facebook or youtube but this is not something that should go unnoticed. I wrote to AmericInn corporate and was told they were independantly owned/operated and the owner replied to me. He let me know that they had made a change in housekeeping leadership.

Needless to say, after this debacle I will not be back. I'll still stop into the sawmill for dinner and a drink after golf but that will be it. I'll pay extra to stay at Giant's Ridge.

“If it weren't for the train”

Just spent the last two nights at this hotel. We've stayed several times in conjunction to ski races at Giants Rigde. The hotel is nice, service good. They offer both a microwave and fridge in our room. Too bad the location is so close to the trains track.

Rates are high but maybe because there was also a hockey tournament in town. If you're a light sleeper - you'll want to find somewhere else

“What a Charming Surprise!”

I don't know whan I've come into a more cozy and warm feeling hotel! We walked in on the 9th of October and it was decorated so cute! Some Halloween and a lot of fall decorations in the lobby which was very inviting! A nice fireplace and big stuffed sofas and chairs welcomed us along with a lot of magazines to read.
The room was very clean and nicely furnished with just about anything you'd like; ironing board and iron easy to get to, also a microwave and refrigerator! The staff was very helpful in getting us directions into town to the American Legion where we had meetings. We were able to use our AARP rate so that was an added bonus. In the morning, we had a very nice breakfast of eggs, sausage, waffles and toast, juice, rolls etc. were offered in a nicely furnished dining area all included in our room rate! I was also able to check my email which was helpful. A very nice hotel and I would recommend it highly!

“Way Overpriced!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2008

My sister and I stayed here to visit a sick relative. We have stayed here a couple years ago and agree with earlier posts that the trains are unbearable!!! However, take this hint: ask for a room on the front side of the hotel. I THINK I heard a train horn once. Having experienced a room on the back side of the hotel, believe me, I was amazed at the difference! They have also gone through some recent upgrades with new beds and bedding. Was a huge improvement over two years ago. The breakfast wasn't too bad. Not very well stocked. There were both hot and cold selections. Obviously, since they did their upgrades, they have decided that they can also raise their rates WAY too high. We paid $116 a night for a standard room. Give me a break! This is Virginia, MN - not some big city or great vacation area. My cousin, who lives in the area, said they have a new owner. Note to owners: GET OVER YOURSELVES AND LOWER YOUR RATES!! Would I stay here again? If I ever find myself in the unfortunate position to have to be in the area again, I probably would only because there is nothing better in the area, so you are stuck with paying way too much money.

“Sleepless in .....Virginia”

This hotel is great - nice room, in room jacuzzi, swimming pool, continental breakfast ...BUT.....when you see ear plugs next to your bed (because of "train traffic") beware! The first thundering train at 10pm was quite funny - windows rattling and the nostalgic noise of the whistle ringing in your ears.....but by 2am, this is no longer funny and you have a very sleepless night ahead of you. I was not surprised when no-one on the staff asked me if I had a good stay with them. Most of the others at breakfast looked equally bleary eyed. Lovely hotel, great staff, noisy and frequent trains about 15 feet from you bed.......try to find somewehere else if you like to sleep at night.
