Pros: Right next to the Sawmill which has great food and a fun atmosphere. Plus, it's essentially in the same parking lot so if you tie one on, you can walk back to your hotel.
As others said, microwave and refrigerator in the room is nice, especially to heat up the leftover pizza from the sawmill the night before.
Staff is usually very nice and polite and the breakfast in the morning isn't bad but get there before 8.
Cons: The trains are every 2 hours or so and there is no way to avoid them. The hotel is right next to a crossing so the horns blow every time they approach the intersection. The only advice I can offer is to request a room on the highway side of the hotel as that does help considerably.
My most recent and what will be my last stay, I encountered a giant blood stain on my sheets just as I was about to climb into my bed. And I mean giant, about the size of a basketball. I called to the front desk and the younger gentleman was very nice. He came to the room and eventually left to get a biohazard bag to clear out the blankets and sheets. I complained the next day but the manager wasn't there or wasn't available and I had to leave for golf. Later that night I spoke with the ladies at the front desk and complained to them. They said they had heard about it and that housekeeping was having some serious issues as of late and they were not surprised by my experience. The next morning I was checking out and I spoke with the manager then. She actually had the nerve to accuse me of doing it to get a free room. Yes the rates are high for this area and location but I can swing the $100/nt rate without resorting to some disgusting tactic to get a free room. After a little haggling I was comped my two night stay. Had I been able to change rooms I would have only asked for one night but apparently that was not an option. I was asked not to write any reviews or post the photo of the bedding to facebook or youtube but this is not something that should go unnoticed. I wrote to AmericInn corporate and was told they were independantly owned/operated and the owner replied to me. He let me know that they had made a change in housekeeping leadership.
Needless to say, after this debacle I will not be back. I'll still stop into the sawmill for dinner and a drink after golf but that will be it. I'll pay extra to stay at Giant's Ridge.
