We came to Minneapolis to see some of my family, see some sights (husband's first trip to Minnesota) and catch a Vikings game.
We did a VERY thorough check of all the hotels in the area, deciding on the Hyatt for previous good reviews, location and reasonable rates...man, we should've gone ANYWHERE else!!
We found the hotel after driving in from the airport. Parking was in a shared garage with the public, $17/day. You have to pay on the 1st or 3rd floors before going out to your car to leave the garage.
We entered the hotel area and there were throngs of people everywhere. There was a national high school debate competition being hosted by the Hyatt that weekend. All the kids we ran into were very polite and no extra noise from all the young guests. However, when we checked in, the front desk advised the hotel was undergoing renovations, so we might hear some noise/construction Friday (we arrived Thurs night) and nothing to be done over the weekend. We understood, being that we would be out and about throughout the stay anyway. Friday morning began this horrid jackhammer/drilling noise DIRECTLY above us. The front desk staff that checked us in said there was at least a 6 floor buffer between our room and the floors being renovated. We found that hard to believe...the noise started promptly at 8am-ish and continued till we were hurrying out to get away from the noise. Ok, we expected noise, but this noise was terrible!!! Saturday morning, guess what? More noise! At 8 am again! We went downstairs for breakfast at the Taxxi American Bistro in the hotel (servers here were VERY nice, food was ok and pricey) then went back up to get ready for the day...my husband called to the front desk to advise of the noise and the front desk had no idea any work was even going on! On our way out for the day, we stopped at the front desk and told them the construction was still going on, even though we were told nothing would be going on during the weekend. They apologized and said will have to check with the management, they advised the front desk of the 'no weekend work' but there was some miscommunication somewhere. In the end, we got a discount on the Saturday night rate only.
The hallways throughout the hotel were very dingy and rundown...probably why they're renovating. Our room was ok. They had run out of regular rooms, so we were given a handicapped accessible room. The bathroom appeared to be renovated with a granite countertop sink, newer looking furniture and a big flatscreen TV. We asked for a room as high as possible per previous reviews and had a nice 18th floor view of the city looking north. The hotel staff was overall very nice, it just appeared that the management needed to better inform their staff or have better communication with their contractor on times they would be jackhammering away.
We tried the skywalk through the Convention Center, a little bit further of a walk if going downtown; we suggest toughing out a couple blocks and entering at the Symphony Hall to start the skywalk, you'll save time. Ask for a skywalk map from the concierge. We were in town during the Hollidazzle parade right down Nicollete Mall, very cool! Brit's Pub was a block over, great food there.
Room Tip: Make sure your room is AWAY from the construction floors!
