We stayed at the Cliff Dweller on the way to Canada with our kids. We had a standard size (they are all the same I think) room with an amazing view of Lake Superior. It was as though you were being dangled off the cliff and no one was around. The staff was comprised of exchange (students?) from all over the world. We were greeted by a wonderful young woman from Jamaica. The owner wanders about the place with her dog and makes sure things are just so. She provides a wonderful buffet breakfast that is prepared fresh in a kitchen.
The game room is simply a room with games - a giant checkers game, board games, a lending library...nice for a change. Peaceful.

This has to be one of the best-priced stays on the North Shore for the time of year we went ($59 midweek/off-season). The room was clean and comfortable, free breakfast was involved, and both the evening and morning staff were very friendly and helpful. It was an easy drive into Grand Marais, and convenient to many hiking trails. Watching the sun rise from our balcony over the lake was amazing; there's nothing like hearing the lake outside your window first thing in the morning. The place could use some basic updating, and I admit the exterior corridors set off my sketch-detector at first. But any imperfections were offset by the incredible views. For the price, location, privacy and hospitality, I would definitely stay again.

I don't think we could have been any closer to the lake! Each room has a private balcony overlooking the lake. With the door open you can listen to the sounds of the waves crashing. The staff is mostly international students, and the one who checked us in was very efficient and friendly. The room was clean and we had a microwave and refrigerator. The hotel does not have a pool, hot tub or workout facilities, but the relaxing atmosphere made up for its lack of amenities such as those. The wi fi was very fast and worked well. They offer a continental breakfast in the morning. We enjoyed the food and the great lake view as we ate in their breakfast room. We will definitely be back!

Views from the balcony are unsurpassed. Check-in and breakfast were efficient and pleasant. Rooms could use a little TLC - sliding door screen was on its last legs. Dorm-size fridge in the room was a nice bonus. Plan on unplugging from life while up here - no AT&T signal, slow WiFi & limited TV channels - perfect excuse to get out and explore the natural beauty of the area. Fellow guests seemed to be active (marathoners, kayakers, hikers, etc.) and "low maintenance" types who want a clean, comfortable room at a reasonable price.
