“Great ski value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

people found this review helpful

Stayed in a ski-in, ski-out condo that was designated as pet friendly. Very clean, staff was friendly, and everything was convenient. The skiing is very good by midwest standards.

Pros - great location on the mountain, good amenities, friendly staff, great value, real wood-burning fireplaces with plenty of wood provided

Cons - not related to the lodging, but something to be aware of are the slow lifts on the mountain. With about 1,000 feet of vertical, there are no high-speed lifts. Lines were almost non-existent (good), but once you were on the lifts, it was a long slow ride to the top. Coupled with the fact that the lifts close at 4pm, this doesn't leave quite as much time as we would like for skiing. Also - snowmaking is limited and they are very dependent on natural snow, so early in the season may mean limited open slopes if haven't received much natural. Otherwise - the skiing is very good for the region.

“Fantastic service! Great place for family.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We spent three days here during the first week of January, 2012. There were 6 of us, 3 adults and 3 teenage kids. We stayed in a 3 bedroom townhome which was the perfect size for us. We found the service was amazing. We had a bit of a mixup with our lift tickets, but Trisha at the front desk took time on her day off to sort it out first thing in the morning so we could hit the slopes. She also went to the post office on her day off to pick up a couple packages for us! Now that's service!

We all loved the ski in/out option although figuring out what to do with our shoes when we skied out from the ski rental place and then wanted to finish at our condo was a bit confusing but we worked it out. The kids loved the freedom of choosing where to ski on their own and going back for food whenever they were hungry. We enjoyed that as well.

The service was great. The staff built campfires for free s'more roasting whenever you wanted, and supplies the fixins for it too. At one point, we didn't have matches in our townhome, and a call to the front desk resulted in a knock on our door 10 minutes later and voila, we had matches!

The hot tubs and pools have really, really strong chlorine, but it was still nice after a day on the slopes.

We also ate in Moguls restaurant, and the food was fantastic. The service was slow one night, but really quick the next, and on the slow service night, our fantastic server adjusted our bill for us, which was unexpected but appreciated!

Overall, we loved this place. Our townhome showed a bit of wear and tear, but nothing major and the service and convenience was terrific. We'd go back tomorrow!

“Amazing Family Ski Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

We stayed here 4 night in early jan as a spot to invite family members for a late Christmas. The units are personally owned and we had 635, 636, and 637 which opened to form a beautifully appointed home that slept 10 comfortably. The kitchen was a bit squeezy but it didn't worry us too much. It was terrific to ski out of each morning

“Caribou Highlands Townhomes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed in one of the townhomes with a group of 12 from 1/1/12 - 1/4/12. The townhome was clean and well furnished. It was easy to get to and from the ski hills.

The only complaint was about the front desk. We called multiple times to request more towels and were ignored.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review and give us your feedback. I am so sorry that the level of guest service did not meet your expectations. I have already had a discussion with my front desk staff to make sure they are following up on all guest requests. We don’t want anyone’s requests to go unanswered. I am pleased that the rest of your stay went well. If you’ll give us the opportunity to make this right for you, you may contact me at trisha@caribouhighlands.com. Thank you for being our guest.

“Average... it's okay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We booked our stay early hoping for snow, but alas no snow. However, this IS NOT the resort's fault. The condo was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. We did report damage to our condo after we got to our condo to be sure we were not charged for it.

Disappointed in the customer service. We were traveling from Iowa. We stopped in Duluth (a couple hours away) to grab a bite to eat and look around (bit of shopping). We debating staying and doing more shopping or heading up to Lutsen. We decided to call Caribou Highlands Lodge to see if it was possible to even check in one hour earlier (check in is 4:30pm and we wanted to know if we could get in at 3:30pm). The front desk said they would check with housekeeping (we were put on hold for a couple of minutes). We were told they (front desk rep) talked with housekeeping and it would not be any problem to check in at 3:30pm. Great, decision made we hit the road. Arriving at 3:20pm, we were told at the front desk our room wouldn't be ready until after 4:30pm. We explained we called ahead and were given the 'okay'. Response: well, sorry, your room isn't ready. it would appear we have a lack of communication between the front desk and housekeeping. They offered to get us something to eat in the eatery, but we had just eaten and snacked in Duluth. We said 'no thank you.'

We got in our car and drove about for a bit and then just sat in the car listening to music. We could have sat in the lodge, but it was noisy (warm & toasty) with traffice. We did head back at 4:30pm and was told our room would be ready in about 10 minutes. Standing there we overhead several others who had a 4:30pm check-in being told it would be 'some time after 4:30pm' before they could check in. No one could give them specifics. We also heard someone complaining about the shuttle service to the slopes. They waited over 20 minutes and ended up walking (and it is a bit of a walk). They wanted to know why the shuttle didn't come. The desk rep gave them a card and said to call next time.

Our son did do snowboarding, but he said getting from the parking lot/lodge to the slopes was difficult. There were not any shuttles running that he could see.

I decided to skip skiing (lack of snow and interest) to focus on work. Why not, we had wi-fi in our room. Unfortunately, I was kicked off more than on. Every 10 to 15 minutes I had to re-connect. Not very condusive to getting much done.

The condo was fine (although the bathtub drained very, very, very slowly). Needs some work. I think if we had snow we might have been more interested in hitting the slopes (not the lodges problem). We felt there was a lack of communication between the services.

Don't think we will be back (at least not for ski season).
