Wonderful place to get a taste of the great north woods on the edge of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area without roughing it - although we did a little roughing by canoeing on Hegman Lake a short drive north of Burntside (pretty cool - saw some pictographs on the rocks). A tip: if you want to explore Burntside Lake, rent one of the pontoon boats, as the lake is pretty open and, with just a little wind, can become a bit rough for a novice canoeer. We were there in mid-August and, to our delight, had almost no issues with the dreaded black flies or mosquitoes - with that said, be sure to come prepared with insect repellant and appropriate clothing. The cabins (our party consisted of 2 couples = 2 cabins) were small but clean and well-equipped. The setting was, well, the setting was the north woods - pristine, quiet, beautiful. The restaurant in the lodge offered fine dining and great sunsets. Another tip: bring along some good single malt - sipping Lagavulin on the rocks outside your cabin on the lake shore is the perfect way to end a perfect day on the lakes of the north woods. Great place to get away from it all.
