I've been coming to Edgewater twice a year since 2010. So I've been here now about 5 times. My kids and I always have a good time here. I've always stayed in the hotel where the waterpark is located. The rooms have always been clean and nice. My first experience was on my birthday. I came up there with a friend and stayed in the king with jacuzzi tub and fireplace on Lake Superior. It was a lot of fun and it was a great deal at only $100. The other times have been with the kids on Lake Superior and we have gotten a regular studio style room and a 2 room suite. Both were nice and both had great views of Lake Superior. I felt that it was always pretty quiet. You can hear the traffic but it is not as loud as some say. It's not terrible or bothersome. The deck was decent. Not the cleanest but still nice. I stayed up there on the 4th of July 2011 and sat out on the deck for a while and enjoyed the view. My most recent stay was this past weekend, Feb. 3rd-5th 2012. I chose a waterpark view room to at least give it a try. I was a little nervous by other reviewers that said it was way too noisy. I didn't think it was bad at all. Again not bothersome. I could faintly hear people and the water bucket tipping. When I did check in I was originally put on the first floor. I asked for a higher up room because I personally don't want people chillin' outside my window while I'm watching tv. I know I could just close the curtain but I wanted a view and not hide out in a cave. They were very accommodating and offered me a room on any one of the other levels. I was lucky since it wasn't as busy so they had several choices left. I picked the second level which was great. I had a view of the lazy river. The room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Even the couch was comfortable! The room had 2 queens and a pullout couch which was enough room for me and my 4 kids. The bathroom was big and was clean. I enjoyed the Bath and Body Works soaps. Although I liked when they had coconut lime verbena.
Check in was same as usual. I checked in late so it wasn't so bad but I know it can be a long wait to check in at check in time. It's not terrible but it's the only hotel that I've been to that takes the longest. Not sure why. The people that have checked me in have been very friendly.
The waterpark was great as usual. Not a huge waterpark but still nice. The slides are fun and the wait is minimal even when super busy. When it was really busy we had some wait to get a tube to go down the lazy river. Not too bad though. Unfortunately the kiddie pool closed twice the first night due to poo I'm assuming. The next day it was open all day. We spent a lot of time out there. My older kids like the vortex but it gets a little annoying when there are too many people in it. I like that the larger pool has plenty of balls for people to play with. The lifeguards are very attentive. Although there was one that was yelling at a lot of people in a rude manner. I understand safety is important but the way she talked to some of the people was pretty rude. Other than that the waterpark was great as usual.
I've never had the breakfast so I can't say anything about that. The only food I ate was the pizza and it was ok. Nothing special.
Now I will talk about what bothers me the most. First I want to say that the first few times I came they use to have a black book with a list of amenities, close restaurants, a brief history of Lake Superior, rules, etc. I thought that book was great to have handy. The past couple times I haven't seen it and I really miss it. It was really nice to have a handy guide to the hotel and surrounding area. I'd really like to see that again. The other thing that bothers me is that this is the only hotel waterpark that I've been to that you can't swim past check out. Most hotel waterparks I've been to at least let you continue swimming until check in of the next day so instead of noon I think they should at least let you swim until 3pm of your check out day. I've taken advantage of this at other hotel waterparks. I checked out and swam for the extra hours and then left. I'm not sure why they don't here. I found this out last 4th when we didn't get much of a chance to swim due to sightseeing. So we thought we would just swim until 3pm on our check out day. We were there for 20 minutes before someone dressed up, not a lifeguard, came and told us we needed to get out if we were not staying another night. Not too terribly rude but not that nice either. This was my fault for not paying attention but I just thought they were like the rest. My other complaint is parking. It sucks period. If you do leave at night it is quite an experience trying to get another parking spot. I was a little angry with the people that chose to make their own spots. Like a large SUV parked up a curb and in a bed of rocks or a car parked in a loading only zone. I think they should be penalized for that. Maybe they were and I missed it but if you can park anywhere well then I certainly will but I just don't think it's fair to the people who park far away and choose to park legally. A minor complaint was no Kleenex. Maybe they just forgot my room but it was nice to have in the past and the container they had was cute. While that really isn't a huge issue it is nice to have. The vent system hasn't been that great but the past couple of times it wasn't too bad. The first time I was so cold and thankful I had a fireplace in my room. I did complain the next time and I was given a gift certificate which I was surprised and happy about. I also feel that the prices are getting quite steep. It's nice that they do offer deals but I've noticed the prices going up. I will continue to come here when I come up to Duluth but only if I can get good deals. I paid $164 a night for both night and that's without tax. Pretty spendy but the kids and I had a great time. Overall it's a great place!
Room Tip: Chose a room where the waterpark is if possible. If you're going to pick a waterpark view try to...
