Our family has stayed at the AmericInn in Detroit Lakes many times, usually over Christmas.
It is a great hotel overall. It is very clean, and the staff is very nice. The continental breakfast is very good. They also supply free soup in the evening.
The only problem I encounter regularly is noise. The AmericInn advertises its quietness ([-]). But despite the technology, there are still problems with noise. I never heard people in the rooms next to me. However, I heard the trains going by, and in the morning, when breakfast started going in the lobby, I heard people talking and the alarm on the waffle iron. Also, mysteriously, there was a lound slamming sound at 4AM as if a large door was closing.
Most hotels in Detroit Lakes are near the train tracks, so I assume you would be able to hear the train from those hotels as well, but I am not willing to give up a good thing at the AmericInn to find out.
This problem is minor, and I am willing to run the fan to get a good night of sleep. You may want to bring a pair of ear plugs. Our family will likely stay at the AmericInn next Christmas.
