“Avoid at all costs!”

We made our reservation online as we had never had a bad experience at an AmericInn. We should have realized there was a problem when we pulled up, but it had been a long day. After seeing the flash mobs on TV from Maryland, we thought it was happening here in the quiet suburb of Minneapolis. Carloads of "youths" were being dropped off at the front door. After checking in, it appeared that the "youths" either figured that the AmericInn pool and hot tub were better than a 7-11 to crash OR it was allowed by the hotel management as they walked right past the front desk! When we went down to the hot tub later to relax, we found the "hot" tub to be anything but that. Warm maybe, but by no means anywhere near hot. The youths fled the hot tub when we arrived but were quite LOUD in the pool and also while they were fighting over the use of the sauna. I commented that what type of parent would allow young kids to use a sauna, but then realized silly me, there were NO parents to be seen.
The room was fine, except for the occasional loud music from a car (perhaps picking up or dropping off another flash mob).
I would avoid this AmericInn as they apparently don't mind this type of activity and are not concerned with the actual paying customers.

Room Tip: Avoid the balcony rooms as the loud music from cars in the lot is heard clearly in your room.

“Poor room quality, unclean”

We stayed at this AmericInn for a wedding at the near by Convention Center. The fact that the hotel had a shuttle to the center was the only nice thing about the place. However, the shuttle driver was texting on her cell phone while driving.... dangerous!

I've stayed at many AmericInn hotels before and this one in Brooklyn Center was far below the quality that I am use to from this chain. The cleaning service took away dirty towels without bringing clean ones back leaving us without towels! The rooms smelled musty and like cigarette smoke. The blankets were stained and had holes in them. The curtains were full of holes also. Bathroom fixtures were erroding and needed replacing. We even overheard cleaning staff telling the front desk that some folks had checked into a room that hadn't even been cleaned from the previous users.

Other members of our group had similar experiences with the cleaning staff regarding the towels and bed linens. Their rooms also had musty smells and were missing essential appliances (i.e. fridge in a suite was missing, missing iron, etc).

“I'll probably stay somewhere else next time.”

This hotel could use an update. The beds were not very comfortable. Our room had a strange smell to it. The carpeting in the elevator was old and stained. We requested a non-smoking room well in advance and the room smelled of smoke and there was even an ashtray in it. Hardly a non-smoking room in my book. A little attention to detail could make this a decent hotel. I will say that the staff was very nice and helpful.

“Get what you pay for!”

When I walked in to check in there was a note on the front desk that said the clerk would be back in 5 minutes. There was a bell there but I did not ring it due to the note and thought it would be rude to do so. Ten minutes later the clerk came from the back room and said "Oh, I didn't see you there". Really? There was not a soul around for the 10 minutes I was there. She had my keys and paper work ready for me to sign and headed off to my room. The room was clean and livable. One of the lamps by the bed turned on but then immediately shut off. Could not get it to stay on. Ok, so I used the other side of the bed, lamp worked, no big deal. Well, someone had spilled coffee or pop all over the wall so the wall was stained. Better check the mattress for evidence of bed bugs. Thankfully there was no evidence of the little critters, I can sleep! There was a nice little lanai but don't close the door! There was no door knob on the outside!!!! Yikes! Ok, so we have free wireless internet. Well, it is behind a firewall so I could not get to my Pogo game rooms! Then the internet service ended or was lost around 9 PM. Argh!!! Had to get up early so read my book by the lamp that worked and got a good nice sleep! Was a nice quiet room. The free breakfast was ok. Scrambled eggs from powder but at least they were not green. Hot coffee and toast and jam so I was good with it. Again, got the room for around $60 so considering what I paid, it was fine. Don't think I would stay there again though. We need to add a wavering thumb for maybe, maybe not!

“Plenty of other places nearby. Choose one of them.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2009

We stayed here recently for a wedding. Given a choice, I would have stayed at any of the other places nearby and there are plenty of them.

Problems began even before we arrived at the hotel. Depending on which of the front desk staff you reach by telephone, you either need to phone weeks ahead or the morning of your arrival if you want an adjoining room. In addition, certain staff members can be rather sarcastic in their responses to simple queries over the telephone.

The carpet in our room was nasty. It felt wet, even though it wasn't.

The blankets and sheets on the bed weren't all appropriately sized for the king-sized bed we had. The blanket must have been from a queen sized bed because it didn't even reach to the sides of the bed. The sheet wasn't much bigger.

All the linens, with the exception of two towels, were threadbare and worn. The mirror in the bathroom was cracked.

One of the doors that bypasses the lobby doesn't lock, even though the signs on the door imply that it is locked at all hours.

The breakfast buffet was merely OK. I've eaten plenty of powdered eggs without complaint in the past, but these were by far the worst powdered eggs I've ever eaten. They not only had a distinctly awful texture I can only describe as "too smooth" but they had something of a chemical aftertaste. There is a shortage of fruit as the fruit bowls aren't restocked very regularly. Otherwise, the rest of the buffet seems to be edible. The dirty dishes referenced by one reviewer have been replaced by styrofoam and plastic. Unfortunately, this means more trash and the trash bins aren't emptied as quickly as they are filled.

There are mosaics in the hallway floor tiles that are cracked and broken, showing a lack of interest in continued maintenance of the property. The broken side door lock looks like it's held on with an entire tube of silicone caulk.

The electronic key system is an almost complete disaster. While we were waiting to check-in, someone else was getting a replacement key to their room as they were locked out. The woman working the front desk said, "Can you please bring the other keys back when you're done. We don't have many that work." My key must have been one of those that didn't work. I would routinely insert and reinsert the key ten or twenty times before the door would open. My sister, staying in an adjoining room, had the same problem. My wife's key worked a bit better; it opened the door one out of every five insertions.

They charged those attending the wedding a "discount" rate of $75/night. That's about $40 more than the room is worth.

Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

We have worked hard to address these concerns and are pleased to report we have installed a new electronic lock on the doorway. Our breakfast attendants have been food service certified by the state of Minnesota so that they are monitoring the quality of all breakfast items served continually. We have since purchased all new linens to improve the quality of our guests sleep experience.
