“Banned from the Baymont!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2007

I got several employees who live a few hours away from our store. When we have big events going on, I put them up for the night at the Baymont.

To make a long story short, I got one employee who smokes so we put him in a smoking room.

Now keep in mind we are only paying like $58/ Night and for the price im not expecting it to be "perfect"

But anyways, the smoking rooms are really bad when you walk in them the air just reeks like a wet ashtray, and as far as the beds I wouldn't sleep in them unless I slept on top of the sheet.

But anyways it does not take much to take care of this paticular employee, and he was happy staying there and I was happy with the price.

So my employee was staying there once every few weeks over the course of several months, and one day I get a phone call from the Baymont telling me my employee was banned from the hotel and to have him stay elsewhere because he burned the carpeting with a cigarette.

The point here is that when I went in the room with my employee there where several burn holes already in the carpeting that I noticed over the course of several months.

My employee says he didn't do it, and even if he did, the carpeting was in such bad condition I don't see how they can identify 1 more burn hole as from being from my employee and ban him from the hotel when we where good customers.

Now I got to put my guys up at Hawthrone Suites, but its well worth it for the extra $20 per night!

“Will do in a pinch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2007

This hotel was a last minute booking for a funeral and was part of a package deal. I would not seek it out in the future, but it was adequate this time. The cigarette smoke smell that greeted us in the lobby was overwhelming. The staff was very friendly and courteous. Wireless internet was available and easy to use.

The corridors are a bit dingy, as are the rooms - carpets definitely stained. The room had two double beds, a desk, a TV on the dresser, and a nightstand. The hanging space was tiny but the room did have a built-in hair dryer and iron/board. The bathroom was very clean and the shower head was excellent. The cleaning staff does a good job on the daily cleaning. The room also had a (faint) strange odor - like old urine. I don't know if I got used to it or if it was a passing odor because I only noticed it the first day. The bed was surprisingly comfortable and the room was quiet even though the hotel is on a busy road.

When I see continental breakfast, I don't expect more than a muffin or a donut, so I was actually pleased by the variety here. Two types of cereal, individually packaged muffins, bagels, and danishes, a variety of bread for toasting, toaster waffles, toaster French toast, and pop tarts. There was a basket of somewhat bruised apples also. Juice, milk, coffee, and tea available. I have had nicer accomodations at other La Quintas and would rate this one a 2.5 overall.

“new name, same game?”

I am told the La Quinta is the property formally known as the Baymont, so here is my review:

Having just spent only one of four booked nights at the La Quinta on Van Dyke in Warren, I felt I should get a report out. I chose the property for my wife and my stay after reading the reviews on this site. Obviously, they were favorable overall. I would beg to differ.
I would rate the hotel about one star. Beyond the flimsy towels, lumpy too-well-worn bed and limited amenities, was the smell. Our “non-smoking” room had the deep acrid stench of cigarettes past, cured into the very walls. Our clothing absorbed the stink and we were forced to check out with a fragrant souvenir. Shout out to the good peeps at Febreze! We should have figured this nastiness was coming when the smell of the lobby hit us upon entering the building, but we arrived a little too late to run around looking for other accommodations. We did do exactly that the next day and found a great room at the same price ($69.00 a night) at the Candlewood right up the block (check out my comments at their listing – but I will say they very cleverly segregated the smoking rooms from the non-smoking rooms by both floor and wing).
Another reason for our choosing this La Quinta were the reviews for the “free breakfast.” It was great if you’re a fifteen-year-old stoner who finally tore himself away from “Halo” for a midnight snack. Pop Tarts are not “breakfast” no matter what General Foods tells you. Sweet, sugary processed crap should not be allowed to be referred to as “breakfast” or even a “meal.” You could find better nutrition at a movie theater snack bar!
One of my concerns about Trip Advisor is that while we know what we are reading, we don’t know the preferences of “who” we are reading. So, to help the reader, I will identify the reviewer (me): I am 49, a professional in Los Angeles; I eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, enjoy an occasional cigarette with friends (meaning I’m not a militant non-smoker) and have traveled somewhat extensively.
One final note; the staff was extremely courteous and helpful not even accepting a tip when extra pillows were delivered to the room.

“The staff screams at you...now you can't get that everywhere”

I have stayed in some hotels that have wowed me with service and amenities, and I have stayed in some that are poorly maintained, and where I would chose to not again stay.

But when I think of the Bates Motel (of Hitchcock fame) I think of the Baymont in Warren MI. The rooms are more than OK, but the staff treats you as though you are an inmate, not a guest.

Upon check-in (2 rooms) the rather frightening woman who greeted us refused to honor the rate which we had in writing, forcing us to argue our case. She became quite nasty, and we realized that she was the "pit" in hospitality. She was going to win, or we were going to sleep in the street.

The following day I discovered, after taking a shower, that there were no towels. I was naked and wet. and called the front desk. She said she was too busy. I would have to come down to the desk and get the towels. After drying myself with the bedspread, I proceeded to the front desk for towesl and confrontation. She refused me the towels and called the manager at his home to come and deal with me. When he arrived she told him that I had been rude to her, and that I, and my party should be removed from the hotel.

We tried to explain that our reservation had not been honored at the quoted price and that there were no towels in the room...and that instead of dealing with these things with grace, she chose to threaten us.

The manager allowed us to stay. We left the next day. I travel 50 to 75 days a year. I have never, since that experience, stayed in a Baymont.
