If you are new to the Detroit area and want a place that is convenient to all the fun spots in Detroit, Birmingham, and Royal Oak, PLUS a quiet nights sleep PLUS shopping options nearby PLUS great facilities and great staff, this is pretty much the only game in town. I used to stay at the Residence Inn down the road, but it got very old and tired and was eventually dropped as a Marriott property. This place has been around for years, and the hall carpet is getting a bit worn, but they keep the place spotless, and the staff has been there for awhile, not very common with chain hotels. I have been staying there for 5 years, and I still see people I know when I check in. Even more impressive, they remember me. I have not had that experience outside of Europe. There is a very comfortable common area, a solid breakfast, and a much heartier evening meal that you may be used to at the Residence Inn. Free laundry soap for the guest laundry, free hot drinks and cookies, an indoor pool, a fitness room, and a very comfortable bed in a suite that is much more luxurious that you expect for the price, including overstuffed furniture and flat screen tvs. When I stay with family I get two connecting suites; we had 6 people in there for a week and were reasonably comfortable. It is my home away from home in Detroit. Birmingham doesn't have any good options except the Townsend, which if fabulous but not for the budget minded. Royal Oak has no good hotels, IMO. Troy Homewood Suites gives you easy access to both places, plus it is just down the road from the Somerset Collection, a great shopping mall. Having a Walmart next door cannot be underestimated. You can get anything you need at all hours of the day. My only complaint is that they have somehow disabled the auxiliary inputs to their flat screen tvs, so I was unable to connect my computer or Ipad to play a movie. Seems like they should remedy this for all the people who bring their entertainment with them . . .
