“excellent campground”

We stayed here the night after camping at Traverse City State Park. This campground was a welcome change. It is a rustic campground, but very beautiful, . The sites are spacious and clean. The campground was very quiet. It is well away from trafic. A beautiful sandy beach on Lake Michigan is an easy short walk away. The campground is also located close to beautiful hiking trails in Sleeping Bear Dunes. I would certainly recommend it especially if you love camping closer to nature.

“great campground for the lower penisula”

My husband and I stayed there this past weekend (Oct 17th) and it was very quiet and nice. We stayed at one of the prime spots, with their own access to the Lake Michigan. We both agreed that this was one of the best campgrounds, especially for fall camping. Its close to hiking trails, the Dunes, and quaint towns and wineries.

“Our Favorite Campground”

We have stayed at the DH Day many times. Since it is part of the National Park system it is rustic but absolutely beautiful. The campsites are level and the built in grills on the fire pits are nice. This is a popular spot, during the busy summer months people get in line by 5:00AM to get one of the few available spots each day. We love the kids programs throughout the summer. The beach is rocky in this area. You can't beat Art's Tavern - we would drive 4 hours just for their Whitefish burger.

“Clean, beautiful, and affordable”

My wife and I found this to be among the cleanest campsites we've been to - fresh gravel-paved tent sites nicely sectioned off with wood planks, new tables and fire pits, and the nicest, cleanest outhouses if there ever was such a thing. The staff was also very friendly and courteous yet respectful of your privacy. The poison ivy was thick so stay in your site area, but there were few if any mosquitoes at the end of June. Beach access is about a 5 minute walk through the campgrounds with great views of the two islands and sunsets. The nearby town of Glen Arbor was quaint and cozy - IGA store for ice, firewood, food, etc. Also check out Leland for main street shopping as well as the historic Fishtown for shops and lakeside restaurants - nothing fancy but relaxed and fun. For nature enthusiasts, the dune/forest hikes and lake views from Scenic Drive (and other ares) were amazing. Note that this is a rustic campground - no showers and only vault toilets, but both novice and experienced campers with an appreciation for nature should find this no problem. Lastly, you can't beat the price - $12/night and a 7-day car permit for the campground and nearby attractions for $10.

“So Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2007

It is first come first serve. No reservations. Camping with direct access to a beautiful beach on a georgous lake and no crowds. It had everything I wanted, and much more than I expected. Trails, lakes, rivers, canoeing, fishing, hiking, golf on fantastic courses all within a short drive or walk and the list goes on... Views of sunsets that rival any place on the planet. If you like putting your face on or going out with your hair did, this may not be your place. But if you like to hear the waves crash on the beach as you fall asleep, or see just how many stars there really are in the sky, this is THE place. No hokey strings of flamingo lights or RVs with the constant generator noise pollution. No showers, so take your towel along with some soap and shampoo down to the lake. There are so many other things to see and do all along the National Lakeshore. Glen Arbor is just a couple minutes away if you want to eat a yummy meal prepared by someone else, have a beer with live music or need to run to the grocery store. The IGA (Grocery store) is not the std back woods place. It has a wine section - a legitimate wine section, great produce, deli, and meats - oh, and fire wood.
