“Old Hotel? Yes! Up to date? Yes!”

After reading the other post, I was scared to have learned that this was where I had reservations. I arrived about 11:00 a.m. and check-in wasn't until 3 p.m. however the nice young lady at the front desk told me that since I was there on business and had an important meeting to attend that she was going to go ahead and let me check-in and get freshened up. I was put in a room on the 5th floor. An earlier post stated that locals were living in the hotel on this floor...that is definatly not true. Yes the hotel is old dating back to the 70's. But the entire lobby has been refurbished, and the elevator has been replaced with a new up to date Otis elevator with cherry wood panneling. The carpet in the hotel or at least the floor I was on had been recently replaced. I know this because I could still smell the odor of the carpet glue. My room was newly remodeled, and smelled very clean. The bathroom had all new fixtures and great water presure. The new management of the hotel, who is operating the hotel as a private property are really turning the hotel around. I was told that Ramada was going to be dropped at the owners expense because of his/her unhappiness with Ramada...who could blame them. All and all this hotel is not bad, it is old...but it is very up to date with the latest amenities and free wireless internet everywhere in the building. Give this place a chance, you won't be disappointed!

“Don't Let the Lobby Fool You!”

I looked forward to my family reunion in Southfield from 8/26 - 8/29.
Upon arriving at the Ramada, we walked in to a beautiful lobby with a lovely decor - quite impressive, or so we thought. We waited for an elevator and when it arrived, you would have thought we were moving furniture. It looked like a freight elevator. The carpet was worn out and the walls were horrible looking. Our room was on the 12th floor and unfortunately we had to stop on several floors along the way. We got a chance to see how the different floors looked - HORRIBLE. You would have thought were were staying at a worn down apartment building complex, instead of a hotel. When we got to our floor, the pipes in the ceiling were revealed, the carpet was worn, our electronic key card kept getting stuck and this all before we got into the room. In the room, we discovered broken chairs, soiled mattresses and pillows, bad drainage in the bathtub, as well as cracked paint. Also, there was exposed metal sticking out of the bed railing - a hazardous condition not only for adults, but also the children that were in the room. One family member complained to management that the entire building needed to be demolished and they needed to start over. Management said they were in the process of "remodeling", but why have guests stay in what I would term a "motel". The only consolation was that we stayed one night. Some of my family had the unfortunate "horror" of staying three nights. They would have switched, but all activities were taking place at the hotel. Oh, by the way, we had a banquet there, and I swear, if I had known the dishes would be that filthy, I would have brought paper plates. I expected better of the Ramada Inn and would NEVER RECOMMEND anyone staying there.

“Forget it. Would of left if I could.”

Showed up for a Convention (held at the facility) April 30 - May 1 2003. Exterior of hotel and inside lobby wall going under renovation. Scaffolding and workers everywhere. (I guess they are trying) I can understand that. The real surprise came inside. The first set of rooms (on the 14th floor) were terrible. When I got on the elevator my doubts about this place started, carpet in elevator was very dirty. When the elevator opened on the 14th floor the carpet was nasty. The room was even worse. Don't ever walk on hotel carpet without shoes on, especially here. Hey guys a vacuum cleaner can help a lot. The whole room was run down. The bathroom sink had a big gouge in it. We had two rooms and in one the bathroom ceiling had a series of brown stuff stuck to it, one clump had a pubic hair sticking out of it. When I went to the front desk to see the Manager the girl at the desk was rude and evasive. The Manager could not be bothered, she asked again (desk clerk) what I needed and informed her that the 2 rooms were unacceptable she made a smart remark that I didn't need to see the Manager after all what was she there for. She gave me two different rooms on the 17th floor. These were not great but I could make do for only two nights. Carpet in all hallways are very old and could use a good vacuuming. The hotel is an old Hilton property, little has been done to the facility since this Ramada Franchiser reopened it. Several people I found from our convention left to stay elsewhere and several asked to be moved to different rooms. I also learned and saw evidence that the first 6 or 8 floors appears to be being used as public housing, (explains all the old junky cars in the parking lot and the kids running the halls and the old guy out front on the bench in slippers, doctors pants in old t-shirt and unshaven and unbathed bathed for several days.) This guy must have just arrived as I saw him earlier that day with a cart full of trash bags with his possessions being helped onto the elevator by (an embarrassed) complaining that somthing has to be done about this. (about the people). This has convinced me to NEVER stay at a Ramada property again and I am sending a letter to the Convention Sponsor and Ramada Corporate offices regarding my displeasure with this facility.
