“tired and old and lacks customer service”

The room was like going into your great aunt Mildred’s house. Our room had an old couch repaired with a sewing kit, it had old carpet with cigarette burns around bed and other spots (long ones, like someone fell asleep with a half a cig in their hand), tile in bathroom all scratched up, counter chipped everywhere because of bottle cap poppers, the gross thing I saw was when I turned on the shower and the water got into the tub a wad of hair came up that was resting on the recessed drain (absolutely gross, I couldn't even tell my wife or we wouldn't have been able to stay the night), as stated they don’t vacuum around the walls or between the bed and wall space. The only thing this room had going for it was a flatscreen tv (which everywhere has now! Funny, they are advertising the old tvs at the desk for sale for $50).

Location was good. right at the locks and restaurants and such.

Restaurant was awful, service, food, everything. We got vouchers for free breakfast. You get to pick from 4 standard breakfasts. The carpets are horrible in the restaurant and everywhere in the hotel, the decor is dusty and dated (who cares how old it is, you still have to clean it!).

It was so bad, that I wasn't paying for my room and I wanted a nice long weekend in the UP and was hoping to use this as a base but cut my trip to just one day and headed back. It was a bomb. Then the pub across the street was cool, but horrible lunch service there. I don't know if it's that everyone goes off their game when off season comes or what. The hotel didn't even interact with us in the lobby when we were hanging out one day. Check in and check out was transactional. Nobody passes on info because the am lady I told I was checking out days early and how late could I leave without being charged and she said 1. then the next lady at check out was like "you aren't suppose to leave today". sheesh. Hockey teams in town, I wasn't with them and they didn't bother me.

Dump....

Room Tip: yeah, find a new hotel if you want a good room.

“Great hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

I have to tell you we almost didn't stay here because of some of the negative reviews. We were at the Soo during the Columbus Day holiday to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We opted not to make reservations before coming up. After checking out a few of the other downtown location hotels we decided we would go out around I75 to stay. However, first we wanted to eat at the Freighter Resturant that is attached to the Ramada. My husband asked why we didn't just stay here and I mentioned the not so positive reviews that I had read on trip advisor. Well after dinner and deciding we wanted to have a few more "celebration" drinks we checked out room availability. Lucky us they had a room and we were able to get a govt rate (Federal) with no problem. Yes the room could use a little updating but you must remember you are in the UP not New York. We couldn't have been more pleased and ended up spending the rest of the evening in the bar with the most friendly bartender we have run across in a long time and a few locals who were more than welcoming.

I decided then I would write a review to give a positive spin to this place. You must remember it is an older building, rich in history and like I said before in the UP not New York. We couldn't have been more pleased with the cleanliness of the room. Complimentary breakfast to order choice was great as well. Will definitely stay here any time we go to the Soo. Also a plus is the closeness to the Locks and downtown area. Thanks for a great stay Ramada folks.

Room Tip: Our room was on the fourth floor that appeared to have been redone and had "roof" opening...

“Neat property in its day”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2011

The Ramada property is neat, old property with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, while the potential is there, the property is old, outdated, and dirty. While my rooms (I stay here for business for the location) have had working air/heat, but colleagues have had broken air conditioners in the summer and heat in the fall. My rooms are ok, but the "dirt line" along the walls is visible...the cleaners just vacuum with a floor vac and must not clean edges. I would love to give this place 3 stars just for its location (across from the locks and restaurants), but it is just too worn out. I really liked the friendly staff, though. Right now as I write this, I need to go fix the plunger on the toilet again...the water is running on it yet again.

Room Tip: Ask for the 5th or 6th floor and a view of the locks

“good staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

We stayed here this summer and were greatly disappointed. The rooms have not been redone since the 80s the restaurant is tired and wore out. It needs a major investment in remodeling. The owners have a folder in rooms talking about how they bought the hotel because the wanted to own an historical hotel and how this hotel with its art deco history fulfilled this desire. Apparently they didn't do any research on art deco because it is not decorated in that styled more of the flowered wall paper mismatched furniture and dated tv decor..The staff however are very helpful and work well with what they are given.

“Tried but Tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

My wife and I visited Soo two weeks ago and booked two nights at the Ramada. The facility has a rich history but came across wanting in appeal. Our room with a "view" of the locks was cramped and had a slight smell of musk. The view of the locks from our room was 90 percent blocked by broken seals on the three windows which created heavy condensation between the panes, The hotel staff was pleasant and helpful and the restaurant staff tried hard to please. however my first food order couldn't be filled because the chef said the sauce was still frozen. Overall I have to say that the good folks worked hard to accommodate but the facility is old and tired. We left after the first night.

Room Tip: Pass on the rooms with a view unless you do a walk through.
