My husband and I recently booked a night’s stay at the Wickwood Inn., for our first visit to Saugatuck. Based on the info found on the Inn’s website, we were very excited to arrive there. The grounds were pretty and the public areas of the home were fine (not luxurious but ok). The hostess who greeted us was friendly and very nice. We had expected great luxury and hospitality, especially considering the price we paid for the room ($300).
What we found was a tiny, cramped room with a ridiculously small bathroom and closet. The water pressure and lighting in the shower were very poor. The entire room smelled of mildew, which aggravated my allergies and made for a miserable night’s sleep. There was not enough space in the room to open our luggage, nor was the closet large enough to hold it, so we had to trip around the suitcase during our stay. The rug on the floor was worn through in several places. This may seem minor, but when you’re paying premium prices, there should be a decent rug on the floor, and a luggage rack.
The abundant amounts of food around every corner--so glowingly described on the website--were in actuality small cookies, a cracker or two, and a strange snack mix from a jar. Hors d’oeuvres in the evening consisted of some cheeses, fruit, a couple of dips and crackers, and white wine. There were two different types of gazpacho served in shot glasses as well. I consider myself to have a varied palate, but the gazpacho left me nearly physically ill. It just didn’t taste right. Breakfast the following morning was good. There was an egg and onion strata, fresh fruit, yogurts, ham, pastries, and juices. Still, it was served buffet style, which I have never encountered before at any B&B I’ve stayed in. Who wants to belly up to the buffet in a supposedly romantic B&B?
Based on this experience, I will not be returning to the Wickwood Inn. It’s my belief after talking with some other guests, that the positive reputation has been going downhill somewhat in recent years, as the owners have paid less and less attention to the business. It’s a shame, but for the money, I’d suggest you stay somewhere else!
