“Nice but overpriced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Stayed 3 nights the week before Christmas - midweek - and was given a small discount 1 night since there was only 1 other couple in the inn We ended up realizing the other 2 nights were shared with 1 couple one night, and 2 the other - felt a little deceived. In any case, the room was very nice, the bathroom tiny, and the breakfast delicious. The 'common' rooms were very nice & cozy, and the inn had a very nice general feel to it. Just too pricey

“Called and questioned for my review. . .”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

I left a less than stellar review of the Wickwood in (3 stars) 2 years ago. I said it was a decent inn, but definitely not worth the $300 per night I shelled out for it (electrical tape holding the carpet together?). I also mentioned the fact that on two separate stays, the bill was apparently increased at check-out with no explanation.

Several days after listing my review here, I received a call. . . not from Julee Rosso, but from one of the other ladies who runs the place in her absence. This call was not an apology or an explanation, but a SCOLDING. My review was berated and my honesty questioned. How could I have said all those fallacious things on Trip Advisor? Didn't I remember her explanations to me (which I did not and still have no memory of). . . and now that we've had this conversation, wouldn't it be better for everyone involved for me to simply remove the review or rectify this obvious oversight on my part in some other way?

I am still astounded by the lack of professionalism this showed and how absolutely insulting I found their conduct. There was no question of WHY I thought and posted what I did, let alone any attempt to apologize for what I saw as their lack of communication. . . there was merely the statement that I was wrong and I should fix my error as quickly as possible.

I left my review posted on Trip Advisor and have since changed my username to a pseudonym. Since the phone call, I've been debating telling what happened to me, but did not want a repeat of the LAST review I left. I'm hoping that by now enough time has passed that the Wickwood Inn will no longer have my phone number on hand and I will not be harassed for my opinion.

“A Lot to Like (For a Lot of $)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

When deciding on whether to book Wickwood, I was struck by how polarized some of the reviews of it on TripAdvisor were. Given the range of experiences, I wasn't sure what to expect. My husband and I stayed for a couple of days just before Christmas, looking for a romantic, elegant getaway, and we weren't disappointed. The room decor is much more elevated than the typical Saugatuck B&B "country calico" shtick (we stayed in the Christy suite, which was very nice). Our room was large, had a lovely fireplace, and even had a full-sized elaborately decorated xmas tree, which made it quite festive. The food truly is amazing--definitely all it's cracked up to be. And we were grateful to be the only guests around the holidays--loved the solitude and quiet. Nancy was one of our hostesses while we were there, and we just loved chatting with her. So overall, we had a great time. But, as others have noted here, the Wickwood really is overpriced. It's well appointed, but it's an old house with old house creakiness, and a cramped, small bathroom etc. It needs to offer more luxury and amenities to truly be worth the price. It was a splurge for us; we probably wouldn't do it again at this price, alas, despite how much we enjoyed it. We did discover that the prices dropped after we booked in mid-September, so maybe if you wish to go around Xmas, booking later is a better bet for better value.

“Fabulous”

This bed and breakfast calls us back every year, for the last 12 years. The rooms are so immaculate and tastefully decorated, each with a different theme. There are several suites, as well. There is a pantry with ice cold drinks, hot coffee and a selections of teas, as well as different homemade cookies through out the day. Evening h'orserves and wine is served nightly, and the recipes obviously come from Julee's Silver Palate Day. Oh, I forgot to mention that the owner is Julee Rosso, the owner of the Silver Palate? THE Silver Palate! It would be nice to see her- saw her 2x in the last 12 years. But the inn keepers are the same year after year, and the kind and courteous. This is adults-only, by the way.
The breakfasts are true feasts! Fine china and silver, and beautiful place settings. The mimosas are such a treat. Come here with your special someone and enjoy the romance!

“Rather Expensive...A Value? You Decide”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We were one of 3 couples (sisters and spouses) staying the weekend at the Wickwood.

The Wickwood costs $400+ per night in mid-October. Be sure to view their website, as it fairly describes this B&B. The food was very good, starting with hors d' ouvers and wine at 6pm (all finger foods, there were no forks). The following morning, enjoy a very nice brunch at 9am. The receipes used were all said to be from the owner/cookbook author. Fresh-baked sweets, coffee/tea, and various juices are available all day. A variety of newspapers are delivered every morning.

There are 11 rooms, and all were occupied on the October weekend of our arrival. When fully-occupied, dining room seemed crowded for brunch (not so much in the evening, as some guests seemed to be elsewhere).

As we stayed Saturday, Sunday, and departed Monday, we met all 3 of the present innkeepers (Betty was our favorite, as she interacted especially well with the guests). The rooms are nicely decorated, with lots of fabrics and pillows (our bed had 13!). The beds are soft, but comfortable. The baths are tiny (like those on cruise ships 25+ years ago). We had a junior suite (the Villa) with fireplace, but the upstairs was quite warm, and we didn't use it, though there was an overnight frost. Just about every inch of wall space throughout is covered with pictures, or other items.

There is a very comfortable living room and small study-TV room (one 28"(?) TV for the entire house--that was a problem Saturday night as those wanting to see an important Spartans football game were outta luck when a Chicago couple got there first to watch a Blackhawk game. The screened porch was a nice touch, weather permitting. Like all old homes, there are some floor squeeks (especially on the stairs and 2nd floor landing).

The Wickwood has off-street parking, the yard is attractive and has many flowers.

Saugatuck is a very attractive tourist-town with a bit of history. There are over 100 speciality shops, many restaurants, bars, and the like. The tour-boat is clean, comfortable, and the ride interesting. Everything is in easy walking distance from the well-located Wickwood.

Two nights seemed the right stay in Saugatuck, though a return visit is also possible.

Returning to the question of value...some will say the Wickwood is an excellent value; others will say it is too expensive for what is delivered. If one is accustomed to spending $400/night at an upscale B&B, the Wickwood may compare favorably.

Room Tip: Suggest you not select a jr. suite unless you are sure you will need a fireplace.
