“Great Hotel for Families the is close to Downtown Saugatuck”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

We have stayed at the Beachway Resort on two successive Labor Day weekends and will go there again this Labor Day weekend (2011). Here is a quick summary which will be followed by more details.

Positives:
1. Very nice pool
2. Easy access to downtown Saugatuck via the Chain Ferry
3. Detailed website that is very specific and up-front about the facilities
4. Walking distance to Oval Beach

Negatives:
1. A little on the expensive side
2. Hotel does show some signs of wear and tear
3. Limited breakfast buffet

We really like the Beachway Resort and Saugatuck. Labor Day 2011 will be our third visit. We wanted a place with a pool which was also within walking distance of the Downtown, not too easy to find in Saugatuck. The location of the Beachway, which is right by the Chain Ferry (on the Lake Michigan side) and within walking distance of Oval Beach is just about perfect.

The hotel has a very detailed website with lots of pictures and virtual tours. The owners are very up-front and honest about the facilities. For example, they clearly state that the Economy Family Rooms are on the small side and make note of units/rooms that require climbing a lot of stairs. Another nice feature of the website is that you can book the exact room you will be staying in (each room is a little unique).

The rooms are nice a clean (decor is maybe a little dated in places). Again, the web site provides specific details of what to expect in each room. The pool is large and clean with a deep end and a shallow end with entry steps.

The car park does get a little crowded late at night but we never failed to find a spot. The breakfast buffet is fairly minimal (coffee and doughnuts) but again this is indicated on the web site.

We found all of the staff members to be helpful and friendly. The room rates do seem a little on the expensive but may be competitive with the area.

So all in all, I would recommend the Beachway, particularly to families with kids.

“Quaint and GREAT location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

This is an older facility. In some ways, it shows the age. The rooms have been renovated inside - they are little studio rooms - kitchenette with a small table and chairs. Decor is updated and very cute. Very clean. I did have a small issue with fruit flies near the kitchen sink - looked like they were coming out of the drain? But we didn't use the kitchen, so it didn't bother me. All the rooms open out to a balcony or patio and there are tables/chairs to sit on and hang your wet towels from. I had no problems with hotel staff. We only stayed for one night on our way home from Grand Haven. This location is right down the street from Oval Beach, but you still need to drive - the hills are HUGE. Not too far away is a tower that you can climb to access Mt. Baldhead sand dune. At the top, there are trails you can take with markers. The hand-cranked ferry is a MUST! Just a hop, skip, and jump away from the hotel. We were so glad to have a pool - the beach was ice cold, flat, and very rocky. I would definitely stay here again. Just don't expect posh accommodations. Carpet was very thin and floor was a bit creaky in the room. Like I said, it's old. But that doesn't bother me.

“Love it! Love it! Love it!”

I have read some reviews. I did not pay attention, I admit, to "when" they were written. However, we were just there at the Beachway Resort end of June 2011. I have to say, especially having children ages 13 & 11, that we absolutely loved our stay! I love the owners' most excellent attitude and care for their clientele. I appreciate their staff and the pleasantly helpful service we got throughout the entire stay. I love their rooms. They aren't large by any stretch but they have large bathroom- a nice perk, as you aren't in your room much- the rooms are literally poolside & there's so much to do in and around Saugatuck. Just an awesome vacation filled with fun for every age. Love the town! Love the Beachway Resort! We WILL BE BACK Beachway!!!!! Thank you!

“No way, not again”

We had a room that had a separate bedroom for children. It was extremely small and the picture/virtual tour were not even close to the real size of this room. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. It had water damage on the floor and smelled horribly. It smelled like someone had really bad body odor. The shower was made for "little people". I am just five foot and I had a hard time fitting in there. It was way too much money for what they offered, which is close to nothing. They never say that you have to walk up so many stairs to get to the office and main building rooms. (i personally do not mind stairs but for people who do they should have stated that). We got there on a Friday and the kids wanted to go swimming, the pool was so gross. I mean if you have a pool on the property then you need to have someone check it maybe once an hour to get dead bugs and leaves and such out of the pool. Do yourself a favor and shop around for a better place. Oh and another thing the parking lot is not big enough to fit all the visitors cars, so you have to park across the street. And if you come back late at night you need to watch yourself, the hallway is not very well lit. And it was very stuffy in the room the first night and you can not control the air yourself.

We are very sorry to hear you were unhappy with your room choice. We post the pictures and virtual tours online to be very upfront with the sizes of our rooms, especially our economy sized rooms that you stayed in. We do however offer many other rooms that are much more spacious along with cottages and apartments for those looking for more room to spread out.

We agree that the linoleum in the bathroom is in need of replacement and it is on our list of repairs for this fall. As for the smell I am at a loss to explain it and am horribly sorry to hear about it. We thoroughly clean every room after each checkout and the stain on the floor is from a broken seal on the shower that has since been replaced, so it is not a current leak. We would have been happy to come to the room and try and alleviate the problem had we been aware during your stay. As for the shower size, it is a standard shower enclosure.

Our housekeeping staff vacuums and skims the pool thoroughly each and every morning. We very much believe that for our staff to be cleaning the pool while guests are using it would only hinder guest’s enjoyment. However, if the pool was in need of assistance during your stay we would have been glad to tend to it had we known it could use a sprucing.

Our parking lot provides parking for the majority of cars; however we do have overflow parking just across the street if our lot fills. Lights in the halls are dimmed at night as to not disturb guests, but are not dimmed to the point of darkness. And although our rooms in our main hotel share a thermostat, we are more than happy to make adjustments to the temperature of the rooms to accommodate our guests; we just need to be made aware of any discomfort so we are able to properly suit your needs.

Again I am very sorry that our hotel did not meet your family’s need. We sincerely hope that future stays in the area are more enjoyable.
