“The good and the not so good.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

The good: Room, staff, public areas were completely pleasant. Got a good rate. I was pleasantly surprised by the fitness room. Often they feel like after thoughts stuck in closets. This wasn't. It looked onto the swimming pool.

Not so good: Wireless is a "b" network. Should be an "n," but wasn't even a "g." C'mon people, that's no way to treat a business traveler.

Now, I want to you say this slowly & softly at first, then keep repeating it faster and louder until you're screaming at a frenzied staccato pace: It's. On. The. Airport. Flight. Path. Took a couple hours to get used to having planes fly directly over my room. At some point I became numb to it (I doubt that the planes stopped). Once the numbness set it, I was fine. It's a little tricky to find. Not visible from Merriman -- the main adjacent street. Or so it seemed to me. It's next to the Hampton, which is easier to spot.

Upshot: I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: Facing away from the airport might be a good thing.

“bad service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

When we checked in, there was only one person in the front desk. And he gave us the wrong key, and we couldn't open the door to our room. I got down, and got a replacement key. I did get a free breakfast coupon for the mishap. We requested a cot for our room, and it didn't show up. We called, and was put on hold for many minutes, before we gave up and hung up. I had to go to the front desk, and request the cot again in person, before the cot eventually got delivered.

The room was pretty big, with microwave and fridge. Breakfast is available for a fee.

Later, I thought I lost my cell phone charger at the hotel, so I called. I was told I would get a call back. I never did.

I was disappointed in the experience and the Hilton brand. I expected better.

“No problems, good value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

Travelling from Ottawa ON for a hockey tournament, we checked into the hotel Nov 24 2011. It was Thanksgiving Day and the restaurant served a fabulous turkey dinner that I couldn't finish. Brought it up to my room and had dinner again the next evening, all for $9.95. The restaurant offers a dinner every night for about the same price, whitefish one night was $14.95 though. To clarify though, restaurant is just tables set in one part of lobby, and is only open for breakfast and dinner. Great breakfast, (that was included for us, but some guests need to pay $9.99 for), including bagels, english muffins, dry cereal, fresh fruit, (whole apples, pears, oranges as well as fresh fruit salad), oatmeal, yogurt cups, cartons of milk, eggs, bacon, cooked to order omelettes, sausages, pancakes/waffles (yes, they will do blueberry if you ask!). There is also a great italian restaurant down the road a bit (you could walk) could Leonardos. Room was clean, internet included. Access code when when check in expires Saturday night at 11:59pm, so if you are staying until Sunday you will need another code, slight inconvenience. Hotel offer Neutrogena toiletries, flavoured creamers in room with coffee maker. One note: hotel is very close to airport. It can be loud if you are a light sleeper. Our room faced the back of the hotel where you could watch planes landing as they flew directly over hotel at a low altitude. Other than that, comfy beds, great service, good location for what we needed. We would stay again if travelling to Detroit!

“Turned my day around :)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

I had a bad travel day wherein my connecting flight was repeatedly delayed, then cancelled, so I was "stuck" in Detroit. The airline mishandled my bag and sent it on another flight even though I requested they send it to baggage claim.

I did not like the motel that the airline tried to check me into, so I called my company's travel department to get a hotel room elsewhere. This Hilton Garden Inn was a good choice.

This is a very nice property with top-notch staff. After explaining my situation to the front desk clerk, I mentioned that I needed to buy some clothes and toiletries at that late hour of the night. He recommended a 24-hour wal-mart that was (thankfully) in a "good part of town.". Clean, quiet, spacious rooms. I was able to rest well for my flight the next morning. Breakfast was great.

“Excellent Value Airport HGI”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2011

If you're looking for a cheap, clean and friendly place to sleep around a flight at the Detroit airport, this is a great bet. The value is excellent and it's exactly what you would expect from an HGI.

Room Tip: All rooms are effectively the same.
