“Restaurant at Garfield Inn - Skip It”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

We had dinner with friends at the restaurant at the Garfield Inn this past Saturday night (10/9/2010). The food was certainly not worth the price. My wife described her ravioli as tasteless. My steak was way overdone and pretty flavorless too (all I could taste was the onions and sauce). While the dining rooms are nicely decorated, the quality of the food just wasn't there. The service was interesting at best. When asked how I liked my soup, the server seemed upset that I didn't care for it. For a much better dining experience in Port Austin, I would recommend The Bank.

Please note - to be fair, this is NOT a review of the hotel/inn itself. We did not stay at the Inn, we just dined there. Trip Advisor does not have the Garfield Inn listed as a restaurant.

“Charming Place”

Charming victorian house previously owned by President Garfield and turned in to B&B with functioning bar in the lower floor. Our room was well appointed (C.G. Room) with private bath and deep clawfoot tub. Stayed two nights, with the first night spent with locals and other travelers frequenting the Gardfield Restaurant and bar. We unfortunately followed the advice of a fellow barmate to try a "5 star" restaurant, Breakers, for dinner. We were quite disappointed and wished we would have tried Garfields. Upon returning from Breakers we visited the bar and were shown lots of smalltown hospitality with the locals buying us drinks. There was a guitar player who did various covers and was quite good if not a little too loud come bedtime. We climbed the winding staircase to our bedroom and were greeted with a comfortable bed and silence once the bar closed around midnight. Overall not too loud downstairs.
Breakfast consisted of fresh fruits and muffins, bufffet style eggs, meats, potatoes, and ?pancakes? in addition to design your own omelette. Sunday night (bar closed, no music) was a little colder with the pipes carrying heat clanking throughout the night, but we both slept right through the noise and recognize it was just part of being an old house with lots of personality. Staff was GREAT!!! Super friendly and accommodating. Will only stay at Garfields should I frequent the thumb again.

From making the reservation to checking out, the owner and staff were great. What you see on the website is exactly what you get. A wonderful place and a great location by the lake. Every attention to detail was shown in the rooms. Definitely a place to return to.

“Best that we saw in the area ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

We booked a room at the Garfield in based on website searches, and we were very happy with the choice--it was nicer than anything else we saw in the area, and it was very clean. The building was lovely and interesting, and the room was more than comfortable. We also decided to dine at the inn, which was well worth it--they had a cod dinner on special for half the price of other dinner plates, and it was delicious.
One drawback--the rates are apparently high for the Michigan thumb, though for us they were moderate, especially compared with the rates of similar rooms on the Lake Michigan side, where we usually stay. Moreover the Garfield does not have the "two-night stay required on the weekend" that B&Bs in Petoskey, Saugatuck, and other western Michigan coastal towns have in high season, and we really enjoyed our one-night stay.

“This is the nicest B&B we've ever stayed in, and among the most interesting.”

Reservation process was very pleasant and friendly. Everything was just as expected upon our arrival. Rooms were immaculately clean, furnishings in excellent condition. We ate in the restaurant and found not only a good variety from which to select, but the food was excellent as well. The people were not only couteous but made you feel welcome and at home. A nice selection of fruits, yogurts, and muffins and danishes for breakfast the next morning rounded out our stay. A beautiful town too, overall, just a totally great experience for us. We'll definitely do it again.
