We booked a room at the Garfield in based on website searches, and we were very happy with the choice--it was nicer than anything else we saw in the area, and it was very clean. The building was lovely and interesting, and the room was more than comfortable. We also decided to dine at the inn, which was well worth it--they had a cod dinner on special for half the price of other dinner plates, and it was delicious.
One drawback--the rates are apparently high for the Michigan thumb, though for us they were moderate, especially compared with the rates of similar rooms on the Lake Michigan side, where we usually stay. Moreover the Garfield does not have the "two-night stay required on the weekend" that B&Bs in Petoskey, Saugatuck, and other western Michigan coastal towns have in high season, and we really enjoyed our one-night stay.
