“Best that we saw in the area ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

We booked a room at the Garfield in based on website searches, and we were very happy with the choice--it was nicer than anything else we saw in the area, and it was very clean. The building was lovely and interesting, and the room was more than comfortable. We also decided to dine at the inn, which was well worth it--they had a cod dinner on special for half the price of other dinner plates, and it was delicious.
One drawback--the rates are apparently high for the Michigan thumb, though for us they were moderate, especially compared with the rates of similar rooms on the Lake Michigan side, where we usually stay. Moreover the Garfield does not have the "two-night stay required on the weekend" that B&Bs in Petoskey, Saugatuck, and other western Michigan coastal towns have in high season, and we really enjoyed our one-night stay.

“This is the nicest B&B we've ever stayed in, and among the most interesting.”

Reservation process was very pleasant and friendly. Everything was just as expected upon our arrival. Rooms were immaculately clean, furnishings in excellent condition. We ate in the restaurant and found not only a good variety from which to select, but the food was excellent as well. The people were not only couteous but made you feel welcome and at home. A nice selection of fruits, yogurts, and muffins and danishes for breakfast the next morning rounded out our stay. A beautiful town too, overall, just a totally great experience for us. We'll definitely do it again.

“We enjoyed their food and restaurant area................”

We did not stay overnight at the Garfield Inn. We had considered it, but their prices are much too high for this area, and for what you get. It is a beautiful home, with a wonderful outdoor garden area, and the people working there are friendly. However, the prices absolutely do not match their online rates, at all. And that is not good business. So, with that in mind, I will review their restaurant/bar area.

We went late on a Saturday night, and they were very, very busy. Everyone was in the bar, celebrating. We came for an appetizer and dessert, and a drink. We were seated in the restaurant area, and it is very nice. Lots of old pictures, lovely woodwork, floors, table settings. We were a bit put off by the very loud music the small band was playing-good music, but much too loud for the restaurant patrons to have to listen to. We had the baked potato chip appetizer, with bacon and cheese on them. We also had the cheesecake with blueberries. Couple of drinks. All was very good. Service was very good also, very attentive. Prices a bit high, but not unexpected. We found the place (including bathrooms) very clean. We were not in the mood to stick around to listen to the music or hang out in the bar, but it would be a nice place to do so, if a crowd was there. Otherwise, a bit boring I would assume.

Unfortunately, we have driven by several times and I have rarely seen a car there overnight. It must be because of their prices, and those shared baths. I think they have new owners and maybe they can turn things around a bit by adjusting those rates.

“Overpriced, Cold Empty Feeling”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2008

We stopped at the Garfield Inn to consider staying overnight Oct 24th which I would consider off season. We stood in the bar area 5 minutes before someone showed up to greet us. The rooms are nice enough but only 2 have true private baths, one room you have to walk through the hallway to access your private bath. The third floor rooms all share a bath. The Garfield Room was priced at $185 and the other rooms were $145. I consider this outrageous for off-season the last week of October. We politely left and never returned. There is a wonderful B&B right across the street called Lake Street Manor that offers comparable rooms at half the price and offered us off-season rates. We stayed in the Wedding Ring Suite with private bath, shared fireplace & hot tub and a wonderful homemade continental breakfast for $60. Come on, how can there be such a disparity? Needless to say the Garfield Inn stayed empty that night. You would think the owner would lower the rates to sell the rooms instead of letting them sit empty to earn nothing.

“Visa....don't leave home without it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2008

Web site prices do not reflect actual prices. I left three messages on their phone (Tues, Wed and Fri afternoon). They finally called back and told me that their room rates were $175/$165/$135.

Quite a jump from $89/$99/$120!!

We ended up staying somewhere else =\
