When we arrived, one of the owners was mowing the lawn. It was hot out and he told us that he hadn't yet installed the air unit. I said that we would need that and he said it wouldn't be a problem. We went up to the room. We found it stifling hot. We were going to freshen up, but it was so hot, we decided to leave for dinner. When we went downstairs, we met the other owner. I told her the room was too hot and they said it would be taken care of. Also, that if we needed anything, to knock on the door off the dining room. We left for dinner. We returned about 10:30 p.m., no one was around for about an hour. We tried calling the phone number, but no one answered. No air had been installed and it was now even hotter.
My husband started calling other places, trying to find vacancy. It was now drizzling and near midnight. When the owner and her daughter came home, we again reviewed the situation. She responded that she didn't want her husband getting hurt installing the air conditioning unit in the rain. We had to leave and they said that because we didn't give 24- hour cancellation notice that we had to pay for one full night $175. (We weren’t canceling our room on short notice the regular sense, just not able to stay because of the heat!) My husband paid because he is not one to argue and it was late. We did not appreciate how this situation was handled. It clearly states on their site that says on their web site that "each room is complete with air-conditioning". (I was told that we needed to request air conditioning in advance by the owner’s daughter). My feeling is that the room should have been made comfortable prior to our arrival. Weather forecasts showed that it was going to be a warm weekend (last weekend in June).
Also, as I checked into their website, I find that there are several organizations they say they belong to, but don't. "We are proud members of the Michigan Lake to Lake Bed & Breakfast Association" "Professional Association of Innkeepers International" I called both places and was told they are not members to either place. I haven't called all the other places they list -yet, because I can already see that they list inaccurate information on their site and that when there is a problem, they don't handle it in a quick, professional manner. They don't handle it at all and make you pay. Not what I'm looking for when on vacation.
When I finally talked to the owner after getting back home she started in on the fact that we did not go to the place she had reserved for our dinner. (My husband planned everything as a surprise for my birthday.) He could have taken the time while we were riding our bikes around Mackinaw Island to cancel , but that was not the issue. (Though is was the issue of the owner's focus.) She then told me how the other couple upstairs was fine. (A fact that was not relevant to us.)
We had a problem and wanted it fixed. She said we should have had them install a screen on the door in the room. (Again, it was almost midnight, drizzling, no breeze -it was too little, too late.) If it were cool and breezy outside the screen option might have been workable, but it wasn't.) She mentioned that my husband told her as he was getting our bikes from the garage that the room was ok, but that I was hot. He said that in an effort to be polite to her. We both sat up in the room for an hour, dripping with sweat trying to come up with plan B. Neither one of us would have been able to sleep there.
People go on vacation to relax. This situation did not add any enjoyment to our get-away, it detracted. I don't want that to happen to any other person visiting this beautiful city.
