“Honest review from a local”

I can't believe that people stay at this dump. The worse part is how the "owners" scam the customers. The advertising makes it look way better than it actually is. I've been a resident in the small town of onekama for sometime and come back in the summers from college to work in the Frankfort area. The PPI and the family that runs it has been somewhat of a town joke for years. We can't believe they still run it and that people still come back. All of my friends that work there agree that it is terrible. The owners can barely afford to pay employees. I read here in another review that mike "the owner" shouldn't be in the service business or running any business, believe me, everyone agrees who is employed at the PPI. I offer this advice to anyone who is thinking about staying at the PPI. Spend your time and money elsewhere!!! Best bet would be Frankfort MI about 25 min north. Historic inns that are well kept and great food in the area, all right on the shore or lake Michigan .

I have been going to PPI for over 40 years. If you are looking for the FourSeasons this is not your place. It is over a 100 years old thats part of its charm. Where can you sit in a rocker on a large covered porch and watch the boats, jet and water ski, Baggo on the lawn and Shuffle board. Then walk for ice cream or play some old time arcade games. Walk to lake Michigan, climb sand dune or ride bikes. The best thing is you can let the kids run and be kids without reservations. Eddie at the desk is wonderful. It is truly a jem from the past. Yes it has fallen on hard times but is still a GREAT FAMILY place.Remember you have to book through the Inn in order to use the inn beach and its water toys. If you go through a relator for the condo's you loose out on the that aspect. They Inn also has a large number of boat slips.

“Belated review from fall color tour.”

I am writing my belated review, from our MG Car Club this past October. The reason for my delay is that I tried to work through my credit card company to hold the owner of the PPI to the terms he offered.
Our room and a number of our member rooms were dirty, in disrepair, and in some cases had not be cleaned from the prior guests stay.
We have stayed in one of the "Doll Houses" the past couple years. When we went to our house, we found the light and ceiling fan not working in the bathroom, pubic hairs in the tub, and when my wife went to close the closet bi-fold door, it was not attached an just about fell on her.

I brought the issues to the attention of the front desk, and they said they would take care of it.
After an hour, we went to meet other members in a community room, I stopped by the front desk again to remind them.

Later when we returned to the cottage for bed, a caddie with cleaning items was in our room, however, none of the issues resolved.

The next night during our club banquet in the PPI dining room, our club member asked my wife or I to speak with the owner, as several other members were making him aware or our complaints.

During the conversation the owner Mike, offered to comp our room and other couples. We did not request this, and yet he offered a couple time, we said ok, thanks.

Now at Sunday morning check out, the desk person knows nothing of Mikes offer! The lady said ok, she would comp the bill. I said do I need to sign anythin? No I was good to go. I said, that since there was a $50.00 deposit on my account from the previous year, they could keep that.

A few day later, checking my credit card bill, I have a full charge from PPI. Working through my credit card company, we attempted conference calls, the cc company left an 800 number for the owner to call, no calls. The cc company and I made contact with desk person in the evening, explained our situation, he was going to pass alone the info and we should have a credit in a few day.

30 days later, my credit card compay tells me that I need a signed credit from the PPI, to credit my account. Well if Mike the owner dodges our calls and won't call back, I don't expect him to issue me a credit.

Sorry for the long wind, but the bottom line is: Some of us find the PPI as being a piece of history if you can get past the disrepair, etc. However, when someone offers me a credit, knowing they won't follow through, and credit card laws being what they are with hotels, no way will I be able to get my credit. Plus they still have my original $50.00 deposit which they didn't apply to my bill. Oh, but I thought my bill was going to be zero!

My opinion is the Mr Mike should not be in a service business, or maybe any business.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Greg from Rockford

“Portage Point Inn Not for us!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We stayed at Portage Point Inn this summer and would never want to stay there again!!!! Viewing PPI online it looked to be a great place to spend our summer vacation. When we arrived there was no parking available, tiny parking area so had to park down the road. Entering the facility we were wondering if we should stay. Employees were very rude at check in and our room was like staying at a Motel 6. It smelled and was so dirty. We had lots of insects. Our kids were scared to sleep the night. The beach in front of the inn was small and had some old boats on it. You had to step around them and some ugly shelter to walk down the beach. The food there was a buffet only. It was terrible food. When coming out from eating one of the employees whistled and said hey baby!! In front of my kids. Even though we paid for the week we left after one day. Although we lost what we paid it was worth leaving. Ended up at Grand Traverse Resort. They don't have the view of the lake that PPI does but is a much better place to have a vacation. I do think that if the owners cared about the place they can make some much needed changes and renovations. Could be a great place because of the lake but would not stay there because of the facilities.

“Great location, great value, great time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011 via mobile

Went to the Big Band Dinner Dance. A beautiful classic lake shore inn nestled between Lake Michigan and Portage Lake. The food was delicious; the band fantastic; the night magnificent. Don't miss this Inn and this night!
