I stayed at the hotel as part of a wedding party. Initial impressions on the first night were great. The hotel was new, clean and comfortable. No complaints on the physical environment, but started to hear several friends complain about a surly and unhelpful manager.
Second day, we returned from the wedding to a hotel without electricity. Not the end of the world. There were glow sticks laid out along the corridors of the first floor to guide us to the stairs (which were really far away, but that's beside the point). On the second floor and above, there were no glowsticks to be seen. Or any other source of light, as the backup batteries of the emergency lights had run out.
The electricity had come back briefly before going dark again, and we saw the staff lay out more glowsticks. In a matter of minutes, though, we realized that the soccer camp children at the hotel had cleaned the hotel up of glowsticks, so it became pitch dark as night fell.
The wedding party decided to gather at the pool, which was indoors and well-maintained. We managed to secure one glowstick to light up the area, and sat in the still warm hot tub for conversation, since there was nowhere else to gather, where we would not disturb other guests. Rooms were pitch black, and had no a/c obviously. A few hours into our stay at the pool, a maintenance guy came in and asked us to leave. We said that we would gladly leave, and asked for more lights so we could find somewhere else to gather. We told him we were upset that the children had taken all the glowsticks, and he should try to get some back. He left, and we assumed he was going to come back with more lights for us.
About 45 minutes later, a *policewoman* shows up at the pool, and asks us to leave. She said the hotel had called the police because we refused to leave. We explained that we were fine with leaving, and did not refuse. We asked for more lights, and thought they were getting them for us. She seemed a little confused, but maintained her professionalism throughout. There was no confrontation at all, and we left, since this situation had become unreasonable.
We went to the front desk to talk to the manager, the same surly manager from the night before. She said that she was afraid people would hurt themselves at the pool, and that is why we could not stay there. We would have been fine with that, but she should have come to the pool to manage the situation directly, rather than send a maintenance guy who did not know what he was doing. And then instead of coming to deal with us after the maintenance guy left, she stayed at the front desk and called the police!
Back at the lobby, the manager looked like a complete fool in front of the police, as we explained that she had just kicked the wedding party (all adults) out of the pool, and we had nowhere else to go. It was clear that she had not managed effectively. We did not really mind the police - we were not doing anything illegal, but wasting taxpayer money in an blackout for not doing her own job was just ridiculous. If I had my way, she should refund the cost of calling the police back to the town.
Oh - and nobody at the hotel realized the alarms above the first floor continued to beep throughout the night following the blackout.

Hello, thank you for your review. It was misfortune that the hotel had the power outage during your stay at out hotel. I a sure it wasn’t a pleasant experience especially since you were gather here for a wedding. You as you mention in your review, some of the children at the hotel kept taking the glow sticks that my staff placed in the hallways. It was hard for us to keep up with them and we couldn’t figure who their parents are. I apologize for my maintenance manager’s attitude. He was worried that someone could get hurt and he probably didn’t word his concerns in a friendly way.
I understand both sides – your party wanted to have some fun not sit in the dark, and my staff worried about everyone’s safety. This being said, the hotel was not the one who called the police. It was another guest who took the initiative. I know you were not pleased you had to leave the pool after that but the property wasn’t aware that the police are on its way until they arrived.
I had already talked to my staff in regards to the power outage and the issues that came with it. I want to make sure we will not have such challenges in the future.
Thank you for the feedback. Feel free to get in touch with me at any time. Thank you!
