We had high hopes for this hotel - from the pictures it looked gorgeous and we were hoping to spend the last couple of days of our holiday here - relaxing by the sea and by the pool. We we also looking forward to dressing up in our smartest clothes and eating in the restaurant, which other reviews had recommended highly.
Hopes were still high when we arrived at the hotel - it is in a very pretty spot and the pool in particular looked very appealing. From then on everything was a little disappointing - the welcome was lukewarm at best, the rooms were just okay, nice balconies but very basic bathrooms, we couldn't have the connecting rooms we thought we had booked . Breakfast was quite expensive and not very good - we went down at ten and there was not a lot of anything left, we kept having to ask for crockery, cutlery etc. In the end we gave up and took it in turns to use the spoon! Staff very sniffy and seemed cross throughout. We were sitting next to the bar and could clearly hear them swearing about other customers. Overall the atmosphere at breakfast was not good - there were a lot of other people grumbling. We decided to avoid it the next day and have breakfast in our room - this was a bit better, we got more food this time but some of the fruit was mouldy. Reception staff at the weekend were very cold - always made you wait for a couple of minutes before they would deal with you. Nothing terrible just a series of small disappointments that conspired to make us feel unwelcome.
Our big disappointment was the restaurant. We tried to book a table for Saturday night but couldn't as it was fully booked. I would have appreciated being told that on booking or arrival, or at least advised beforehand that it was advisable to book well in advance. There are no restaurants near the hotel, so we had to go to the main town to find something to eat. When we came back at 10pm the restaurant was completely empty!
The other problem was the very bad smell. The hotel is on the beach but it was a beach covered in lots and lots of very, very smelly algae. Obviously this is not the hotels fault but it was extremely unpleasant. Impossible to swim in the sea by the hotel.
It is not a horrible hotel, but it's not a great one either. It's not value for money and it was not the experience we had hoped for. We wouldn't go again. We would go instead to the Hotel General d'Elbee in Noirmoutier en Ile - a much nicer option.
