“Nice hotel but rather bizarre and certainly a mix of rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I stayed here for one night last week with a friend. I was called on the day I was due to arrive and someone from the hotel left me a message telling me that they had no rooms available - although I had made the booking over a week before - so they had put us into a hotel in Revel, which is about 5km away (and nothing like Soreze)! I was completely shocked but when I eventually managed to speak to someone at reception they said they now had a room and because of the inconvenience we would be upgraded to a suite. When we arrived at the hotel and saw this 'upgrade' we were horrified - goodness knows what the original room had looked like! It was the most basic, dark little room I had ever seen. I had requested twin beds and there were two beds but made into a double. When I pointed this out the chap at reception asked if we could make it into two beds even though we would need extra sheets etc to do so. Fortunately someone more sensible appeared and she moved us into a room that was lovely (202).

All in all the hotel is in a beautiful abbey so it has a lot of natural charm. The breakfast was extremely average but the dinner and lunch we had were both excellent (although the menu is the same). The swimming pool is nice for an indoor, chlorinated one but don't go there for that.

If you want to stay in a unique place in a beautiful little French village in the Tarn then do stay here. Soreze is beautiful and peaceful and the Abbaye Ecole de Soreze museum (to which you get free access as a guest of the hotel) is fascinating. Staying in this hotel really makes you feel a part of the Abbey.

Room Tip: Check what you are booking carefully and if you are not happy then say something

“Stunning setting, historically and culturally wonderful, needs more serving staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011 via mobile

The hotel is an ancient monastic school. The buildings are beautiful. Stayed in the 3* section. Rooms Spartan (it was not a pupose built hotel, and this has it's own charm) but adequate, lovely view, peaceful and quiet. Soreze is a gorgeous GORGEOUS little town. Very quiet with only two restaurants and one pub in addition to the hotel.
Service was very slow as all the other restaurants were closed on the night we stayed. We waited for a substantial time before getting up to leave, at which time the restaurant staff apologised profusely and made a massive effort to feed us quickly, and served us with a free glass of champagne. They were very polite and sensitive to our needs as well as friendly at all times and the food was very tasty.

“Beautiful building but poor facilities”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011

We have just returned from a long weekend in France and stayed one night at the Hotel & Spa Abbaye. I booked the room on the internet after seeing the photo's of the beautiful rooms and with facilities such as the pool & spa, but oh dear what a let down!
This huge ancient building is set in Soreze-a typical French, narrow streeted rustic town with a couple of restaurants and not much else. The roads to the hotel are very narrow but you will be directed to a gated car park around the back which has plenty of spaces. I had booked a Classic Double Room little knowing this was located in the very run down 2* part of the Abbey-note: there are no pictures of these rooms on the website so you presume you will get a room that is shown! The interior decoration in this part is in dire need of a face lift and general maintenance (cracked plaster and grotty carpeting in the stairways) very poor quality decoration also in the minute rooms and the en-suite dark and dismal. The room did have 1 bottle of water provided (wow!) towels and a couple of complimentary toiletries, but they weren't soundproofed with just a wooden floor and thin wall between you and other guests - you could all have a joint conversation if you wanted or listen to them in their bathroom! There are no direction signs around the hotel and we never did find the pool or spa! We ate lunch at a very rustic local restaurant just a short walk away which was in need of a spring clean, but this added to the charm almost and certainly kept the conversation going pointing out the various paraphenalia. There was no english spoken by the proprieter but he was welcoming and efficient, the meal we ate was tasty and served quickly. We had dinner in the hotel which was expensive (cost more than the room) but also very nice. The dining staff were helpful and polite. I dont know where all the other guests were but I wasn't lounging in such an unwelcoming room so we wandered around the corridors reading the history of the monks who had resided there. The private gardens are good to stroll around in. We didn't have breakfast-this cost extra (no such thing as one charge for B & B in France!) Instead, we found a fantastic patisserie in Revel-there is also a huge market here on Saturday mornings which is great. If you want to spend the night much as a monk would have done with no home comforts then the classic double room is for you, if not, make sure you spend even more euro's and book a 3* Traditional or Superior room. Lastly...the French could learn a lot from the English about running Hotels & B & B's and what to provide. I've stayed in much comfier airport hotels!

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before committing to stay.

“Ancient atmosphere, calm, with spacious rooms.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2011

My girlfriend and me stayed for a night there. It was really worth it. Calm hotel. It seems like you travel back in time. High ceiling. Ancient tile. Triple windows... Really strange but so exciting. Plus there is a swimming pool and a very large garden if you wanna run in the morning. There is a few things to do around. A lake, some shops of ancient style furniture that's pretty amazing and the museum of Glass. Not to tell you about the farms around. They sell amazing food for reasonable price. Ask the reception. They even opened the shop for us on Sunday...

“Nestled in a beautiful setting, quiet and sophisticated, yet convenient w kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2010

We stayed here the first week of July, unfortunately only for one night. We didn't know where we were going until our gps told us we had arrived. We were in Carcassonne on our way to Toulousse and needed a place close to stay in between the two. It is a bit out of the way, but the road trip is well worth it, and the small towns we passed by were beautiful, with panoramic views and chateaus. He had reserved two suites, we're a family of 5, and the receptionist offered to put us in a one suite with two large beds. The room was in a building across the central terrace from the reception, walking on pebbles, rocks and dirt. Up one flight of stairs. As we opened the door we found a staircase in front of two huge windows, the kids were excited. A room upstairs with one large bed, a walk in closet and a bathroom with tub and shower, and a tv. Downstairs an other bed a little more private, with its tables and lamps and a bathroom with shower, and two large windows facing a central patio. It was very quiet. The room was very spacious and left the kids upstairs. No a/c but breezy when we stayed.
The breakfast was included, in the restaurant. It was beautiful also. Although it was served from 7 to 10, when we arrived at 9 the ladies were clearing tables, so had to set one up for us. We had to find our own cups and cutlery and some things were finished. Despite this, breakfast was good and varied. A buffet.
The hotel is surrounded by green, at the end of a small town. The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner outside in the garden, under a huge tree illuminated at night. The bar's door leads to the outside restaurant, with a large chimney and leather sofas and chairs and the smell of old coals that give it great ambiance. WiFi connection is only available here with the hotel password, one per connection. Stupendous service.
We would have liked to stay an other night here, if we had known the kind of place this was before hand. I would have also liked to explore the hotel a bit more. It has a museum on a side, and a tea room, accessible from the outside, perhaps also from the inside.
We parked on the street right in front of the hotel, no problem.
The town is cute, small. We saw little people as we walked around.
