“Excellent food, lovely historic hotel, a little bit arrogant”

We only stayed here for one night but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food is out of this world. I’m under the impression that it's a Michelin star restaurant but I can't confirm that. Even if it does not have a star, it certainly deserves one. An exquisite 8 course meal and attentive service made this a very special occasion. The bedroom was very interesting with the bathroom almost being open plan to the bedroom and had a castle like feel to it (as does the interior of the hotel). There was a lovely little garden with a small swimming pool. Good breakfast too.

  • Liked — The food!
  • Disliked — Open plan bathroom - I like the toilet to be enclosed!

“Disappointing start to 2007”

My wife and I liked the hotel , its ambiance and our bedroom but all this pales into insignificance as the Big 31st December New Year's Eve dinner turned into a nightmare!
We were really looking forward to it ; it was going to be a gastronomic delight .
It was to be 12 courses and each one was very intricate .
We started eating at just minutes before 8pm and everything was fine until10pm when we had completed 7 courses.
Our plates were cleared away by about 10.15pm and then we just sat and waited and waited. The couple beside us , who were on a different menu to us were served 2 more courses and then got their bill ,paid and left , saying to us as they left "Were we going to sit around all night?"
At 10.40pm I left the dining room and expressed my concern to 2 fairly senior staff. They said that this was really too slow and they gave the impression that they were going to sort things out ie bring us our next course!
After a further 15 minutes of inactivity and being totally ignored we left the dining room at 10.55pm as no one had come near us to speak to us at all - we felt totally defeated and very disappointed.
As we left the staff said that there was a problem in the kitchen! This was the first time anyone had relayed this info to us!
The meal was very expensive and though we were offered a very slight discount we were very hurt and angered by the arrogance of the madam ( hotel owner)who felt that it was our fault and that we did not understand the complexities of the meal etc She told us that no one else had complained. We tried to ask her if a 55 minute wait was acceptable? Her arrogance meant that she couldn't see it as her hotel's fault.
We have stayed in Gleneagles and have eaten in the Ritz etc so we don't consider ourselves novices when it comes to judging hotels and restaurants but we were very disappointed by the reaction of the hotel owner and her staff.

“Excellent food. Room needs help.”

We stayed here one night in September with my boyfriend. The hotel has a great little inner courtyard and is in a lovely quiet village not far from Pont du Gard. We wish we had another room though a we found ours to be dark and not well laid out and had some other problems.

The bathroom needed some remodeling and was a bit beat up. I peeked into some of the other rooms and thought they were quite a bit nicer than ours.

Still, the hotel grounds and amenities looked lovely and the food was truly amazing. The best we had in the region. It's not cheap though. Appetisers start around Euros 25 and entrees 30-46 and go up to 160. The menus start at Euros 50, higher than what we were paying elsewhere, but again, the food was simply that much better.
The wait staff and hotel staff were very professional, almost too much so as we felt at times uncomfortable with all the pomp and although they knew we were English and couldn't speak French (they can) they didn't speak English to us in the restaurant. It's a minor point, I know, but it can make a difference in how much you enjoy a place by how you're treated and we did feel uncomfortable at times. Still, if you want to dine and drink fine wines in a lovely hotel restaurant, this is certainly not going to disappoint.

Would we recommend it? Yes, if you don't mind paying the restaurant prices.

“Great little hotel. Ideal as a base for discovering the Gard.”

Just spent a week at Le Castellas. If you're looking for a small, friendly hotel in a very quiet Gard village then you can't go far wrong with Le Castellas. 30 minutes from Nimes and an hour from MontpeIlier, Le Castellas consists of a series of attractively restored buildings around a small shaded garden with a welcoming plunge pool.

Even in August, I was able to book a more than adequate double room for 112 euros. A bargain. Breakfast, however, is extra.

Lunch and particularly dinner are very much formal, 5* affairs. The menu itself is surprisingly limited but the food and service is exemplary - almost theatrical at times.

The one down side is that most guests would probably only want to use the hotel for dinner on one or two occasions and there's little alternative options in the village itself apart from the Les Caves de Collias - a very informal creperie with great, simple food at unbeatable prices. Otherwise, the best bet is to visit nearby Uzes (15 minutes by car) where there's a choice of excellent little cafes and restaurants.

Overall, highly recommended.

“Absolutely wonderful from dawn to dusk”

My husband I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in October. We had booked the room on hotels and if being totally honest the choice was driven purely on price. (£55 per night). What a bargain. A beautiful hotel in a wonderful location with knowledgeable, helpful staff. I have to say though that the piece de resistance was the restaurant. Oh my God! 46 euros got a meal worthy of all of Gordon Ramsey's Michelin stars. The service was impeccable and our every need was met.

The staff were unpretentious in their recommendations and wow were they good! In total 8 courses with wine cost 122 euros.

A 30 min drive from Nimes airport in a fab location. You'd be mad to pass it up!
