“Great Chateau, friendly, clean, well worth a visit.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 February 2011

We only stayed one night but wished we had time to stay longer. When you first drive up to the gates the Chateau had a Wow factor! We met the owner at Breakfast, who was very friendly and let us taste his homemade jam's and marmalade, which were wonderful! The owner showed us pictures of how he had transformed the Chateau from a ruin! We would definitely visit again.

“Unexpected Pleasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2011

We were on a two week road trip through northern and eastern France. We only spent one night here, and although it was a bit out of the way it was worth it. The owner has tried to be true to the original chateau in his renovatons. The rooms were warm and inviting. The grounds were lovely and well kept. The breakfast was wonderful. I would recommend this chateau to anyone wishing to experience an authentic 12th century French chateau.

“Overpriced, isolated, poorly managed establishment. Never again.”

On arriving in the late afternoon as, as is the case with most tourists visiting the Loire.. We were tired, hungry and looking forward to checking in to the Henri II suite we had booked months in advance. Having flown literally halfway around the world from Japan we had taken the extra care of reconfirming our booking with them three times before flying to France and were hence shocked at what transpired next. The owner/host, a calculating individual with a high opinion of his establishment informed us that he could not locate our booking in his reservation log and when we pointed out our booking date in the very same log, which had been conveniently whited-out, he shamefacedly made some excuse about a bookkeeping error. We took his assertion at face value but were to later have it repudiated when we encountered the couple that had taken the room in our stead and in the course of casual conversation explained situation. Their change in attitude from the usual "tourists-to-tourists camaraderie" to tight lipped skittishness and failure to meet our gaze spoke volumes.
The Host offered to put us up in an "alternate" room the so called “romantic suite” a dusty, musty low roofed affair in or close to the structure’s attic it was already dark at this point so we agreed to stay on despite the disappointment of not getting the suite we had booked. Imagine our chagrin when we discovered that the faucets dripped and the shower was stopped up and flooded when you used it (explaining that musty odour). Finally on the morning of our departure the host had the temerity to charge us the cost of our original booking to the vastly superior Henri II suite, very bad form, I am probably going to the trouble of writing this review due to the disregard reflected in that final act of greed, one only has four cheeks to turn and by this time he had slapped all four, through dishonesty, deceit, disregard and finally avarice.
Comments on the Castle itself:
The obscenely tight spiral stair cases were a hazard in fact a middle aged guest we met had slipped hurt her back after falling on one of them and had had to extend her stay and was pain medicated as her mobility was severely impaired when we met her.
When we visited the decor of the lived-in rooms was nothing to write home about the antiques on display were a mixed bag, a few looked authentic and interesting while other were tacky knickknacks and out of place, the walking rose garden was poorly kept up and the castles exterior, while nice for a photo backdrop for weddings and such was not really very nice to look at up close if one has the time, which unfortunately you will discover you will have lots of. Add to this the sheer isolation of the place and you soon realize that after 1hour of walking round the place that that a nice long trip to nearby Vouvray and its very nice restaurants is just what the doctor ordered.
I will add that we discovered the exquisite wines of the Vouvray region that way and it almost made up for the distasteful experience that was our stay at Chateau de Jallanges.
My suggestion to anyone planning on ignoring this review and booking a stay at this lacklustre castle is, arrive in the early afternoon and offer to pay upfront and in cash but only after seeing the rooms yourself some of them are beautiful, especially the Henri II suite.

“Remote and Romantic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011

Gorgeous locaton in the Loire countryside, set in lovely gardens with swimming pool and surrounding farmland. We arrived at lunch time after a long drive to a warm welcome from Helen and a lovely glass of wine in the courtyard. We spent the afternoon by the pool and pretty much had the place to ourselves, apart from the donkey, hens and various other farm animals! We had a huge room (Henry II) and a great four poster bed. The ensuite was also large with bath and great powerful shower. Shamed to say we missed breakfast in favour of a long lie in!

One of the upsides of Chateau de Jallanges for me was the rural location - close enough to all the Loire attractions but you do need a car. The local town is 10 mins drive and Amboise a little further, with great restaurants. I do think the Chateau is missing a trick by not having a little bar/restaurant serving food though. There is no shortage of space and even a little old chapel in the courtyard which was being renovated. We only stayed here overnight on our way down to Bordeaux but could have happily stayed for a week lounging around!

“Most wonderful vacation that one can imagine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

We are family with 2 children (14 and 12).
Our pupose was:
1. Show to our children the chateaus of Loire valley.
2. Stay at one of them.
We choose Chateau de Jallanges because of its central location (near Tour, the heart of Loire valley), and because of nice pictures at its site. But we didn't really know what will we get.
All can I say that reality excced all expectations.
Yes, it's real wonderful old chateau, and we've got second floor for our family (separate 3-rooms unit), with panoramic views of huge and exteremely beautiful garden. Breakfast was served always by chateau's owner, Stefan, at hall at ground floor.
All the atmosphere was mostly pleasant and, I would say, unforgettable.
And - yes, because of our central location, we could make our everyday excursions at Loire valley, and see all most impressive chateaus: Chambord, Ambois, Chenoncoux, Cheverney, Azay-le-Rideou, Blois, Villandry and others.
