“Not what it was.”

Third time staying here and this is a hotel which could do with some serious redevelopment. Since we last stayed here my wife has had a hip replacement and the winding staircase to the bedrooms proved a real trial to negotiate. The room was a double, but was very small with a tiny shower/bathroom and a separate wc which was in little more than a cupboard in which it was impossible to turn round. All the fittings were ancient. and tired.

The reason to stay here is the restaurant which used to serve generous and elaborate fare. Now the food is still acceptable but is overpriced - menus at 31 euros and 62 euros and the panache in the dining room has completely disappeared. We shall not return.

“Excellent family run hotel”

The hotel is located in the main square of the small village of Blere. Rooms were quite small but clean with good size bathroom. Service was excellent - friendly and informative owners.

Pool is in a garden across a small side street from the main hotel - nice but freezing even mid-August. Private parking is handy.

Also ate in the restaurant which was outstanding and set menu provided good value for money.

Blere itself is very small with minimal local services, but only 15mins to Amboise with many restaurants, etc. Good base for chateaux and exploring Loire valley.

“Nice hotel, great restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2010

We stayed here for one night on a short tour of the Loire region. The hotel is centrally located at the town square in Blere and has private parking (at the rear), which was very handy as the town gets quite busy. Blere itself is in a good spot for touring the area around the east of Tours, and also the Loire et Cher wine area. It's very close to Amboise.

My main reason for writing a review however, is to recommend the excellent restaurant at the hotel. If you like good French food you will really enjoy Le Cheval Blanc. We had a fantastic meal there. The service was good, without being fussy and, although the staff were happy to let us try our poor French, they spoke English when we needed it. The menus were also available in English as well as French. The food was exactly what you would expect from a very good restaurant, including amuse bouche etc. We both had the millefeuille of cookies for desert, which doesn't sound very French, but was absolutely delicious. Our total bill, including overnight accommodation, dinner and wine was about 200 euros, which I thought was excellent value. We didn't try the hotel's breakfast, so I can't comment on that.

In short, a nice hotel with a great restaurant, well located in the Loire valley.

“Lovely hotel for stop over when travelling to the south of france or a holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2009

Great location, although we only stayed overnight whilst travelling to the Bergerac region of France. The hotel was wonderfully decorated and superbly clean, room were very quaint but very comfortable, the outside court yard was beautiful with small cafe tables amongst floral planters, very delightful. The decor thoughout was wonderful and extremely clean. The restaurant had a varied menu with food which we thought wasn't to die for but was well presented, plentiful and tasty. The service was a little hit and miss but didn't spoil our stay. The staff were friendly and very ameanable.Breakfast was typical continental- fresh crusty bread, croissant, pain au chocolat, jams, butter, yoghurts, fruit compot, tea and coffee and plenty of it. All in all a wonderful stay. would visit again without hesitation.Parking was difficult to find at the rear of the hotel on the road at the back, off which the swimming pool was situated, but no problems for access to the Hotel- straight across the street , although parking was tight in the carpark.Janine Fisher.
