“New proprietors but still the same excellent cuisine, warm welcome, but rather worn bedrooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Be sensible.....this is a very long established Coaching Inn which has acquired a reputation for good food. It isn't a spa, it doesn't have piped muzak, and there is no lift.....beware of the tight winding staircase. What it does have is the real French experience......under new owners the cuisine remains excellent and generous but more traditional than nouvelle......the wine list makes most of the local vineyards, the pool is quiet and at the back of the kitchen garden, and the parking a bit of a tight squeeze, but it is there. We stayed under the old management, and experienced a happy return. We hope to revisit when in this area.

Room Tip: Rooms on first floor at back are easier to access and quieter.

we have stayed there many times in the past, it has never been good value, but it has been a convenient location, this time when i telephoned to enquire if they had 2 rooms for our stay we were told 'yes, they did had 2 rooms vacant' so i proceeded to book, i was then asked what time did i wish to book a table in the restaurant, when i told them that, as we were visiting friends in the town, we would not be eating in the restaurant, i was told VERY firmly that they did not have any rooms free after all, when i tried to explain to them that this was bordering on blackmail, i was just told they have no rooms free and they put the phone down on me, what an arrogant person, so we found another B&B, 'La Gloriette', in town, fantastic, i did look at the Le Cheval Blanc menu when passing, it must be the most expensive in the area by far, so i can see the reason why you cannot book rooms without eating in, it more than doubles the cost of staying there, i also found out that this policy has been introduced by the new owners, not good marketing, especially when you read other reviews regarding the value of their breakfast and dinner, now i have found 'La Gloriette', never stay again at the Cheval Blanc, unless it gets new owners

Room Tip: the rooms are up a narrow winding staircase, which is very difficult if you have large suitcases wo...

“We found it OK”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

We booked ahead and had a pleasant old room looking down in to the courtyard, shower and WC a bit dated but clean enough. Agree the staircase is difficult with a large case but as the secure car park is at the rear advice is to take items needed to the room and lock the cases in the car.
Super meal, no complaints about quantity or quality and probably our third best dinner in three weeks travelling. Highlights were the langoustines in filoux pastry and ox tail terrine.

Good nights sleep, nice stroll to the river, buzzy bar by the bridge (mad keen on French rugby) so good for a pre dinner beer and a bit of entente with the locals in mid world cup. Only fault again was very sparse breakfast for 10 euros but (like many French hotels) perfect for Laughing Cow enthusiasts. NB Although still advertised the pool and delightful surrounding garden beyond the car park was closed from Sept 1.

“rip off”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2011

We booked a room over the phone and were told we HAD to eat there also. It was very expensive, and the local restaurants seemed much better value.

You cant really walk away as there are no other hotels in the village! TRAPPED!

Pool was nice but rooms were rubbish and the old lady running the place was just awful.

Dont book this place and get ripped off - the room was expensive for the quality and the food was absurdly expensive.

RIP OFF

Room Tip: dont book this hotel
