“all the way to France just to stay here and will do it again”

We returned after 3 years and this is our favourite hotel in the world, period. The hospitality is extraordinary and you feel like you have a friend who just happens to have a small castle and fabulous chef. It is definitely a place to relax rather than for intensive sightseeing but it is really very romantic, quiet and special. Guests must love dogs (Irish wolfhound and cute little fluffy dog both provide their own warm welcome).

“Elegant Country House full of traditional French charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

This was our 6th visit to Chateau de Talhouet over the past 8 years and its still remains as charming and elegant as it was on our first trip. The owner, Jean Pol ensures first class personal service and nothing is too much to ask for. The Chateau is situated in the country on about 40 acres of gardens, fields and woodlands. It’s so peaceful and relaxing but is an excellent base to tour Brittany. The bedrooms are very spacious. I have attached photographs of some the bedrooms we have stayed in over the past years and you can see the opulence throughout this renovated historic building. His chef arrives every afternoon with fresh local produce and cooks the most exceptional cuisine. All 4 courses are worth waiting for, especially the local cheese board. His wine selection is very reasonable and well thought through and after dinner what better way to finish off the evening with a large brandy in the magnificent sitting room dominated by the grand open fireplace. I have delayed writing this review for many years, trying to keep this magnificent hideaway secret, but Jean Pol deserves the credit for managing a very romantic, first class country home. I expect we will return again next year and the year after........

“Calm, relaxing, comfortable and authentic atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

We arrived at Chateau Talhouet following a six hour drive from the bordeaux region tired, hot and in need of serious chilling. Within moments we knew it was the right place for us; a nice welcome, lovely rooms, the two dogs, plenty of cool, calm space. We spent two nights and had dinner there both nights which was very good; breakfast is also good. The reception rooms are a delight and it was also nice to socialise with some of the other guests prior to dinner. The grounds are lovely, not overly manicured and perfect for tramping around in. We both loved the building and its characterful details; the country side around is very pretty, lush and wooded. Rochefort en Terre is worth a visit, a little kitschy for us in places but fun for a couple of hours. We'd both love to go back to Chateau Talhouet though.

“Serenity and elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2009

We spent two nights at Talhouet in September. I could have stayed forever. For me the ensemble of the property, the house, the furnishings, the food, the books, the dogs and our gracious host created a sensation of living in a fantasy - an ideal place far from the cares of the world.
I loved the old stones, the comfort, the lack of pretension. It was a privilege to be able to savour the owner's dream even for such a short time.

“Amazingly beautiful setting with history all around”

We stayed at the Chateau de Talhouet for our 5th anniversary in June. We arrived with high expectations from everything we had read previously. The chateau did not disappoint. Fantastic room that was remodeled true to the era with antique furniture, original woodwork, etc. Beautiful gardens, exceptional breakfast . . . just a great romantic setting. I can still taste the homemade butter and jams. Only a short drive to the coast. We only decided to explore little Rochefort en Terre on the last day and were disappointed we hadn't gone there earlier. All in all, a wonderful place to stay for a peaceful getaway!
